Men's Tennis Caps Weekend with Win

March 5, 2017

Final Stats

ANNAPOLIS, Md. â€"â€" A sweep of the doubles matches and wins at the top half of the lineup gave the Navy (11-9) men's tennis team a 5-2 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson (3-4) Sunday afternoon at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis.

The Mids began the day by winning each of the three doubles matches to place the first point on the scoreboard.

The No. 3 duo of Matthew Lee (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) and Andrey Majkic (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.) first won a 6-2 decision over William Bourne and Gonzalo Quintana, then Greg Durham (Fr., Melbourne Beach, Fla.) and Thomas Pecor (Sr., Houston, Texas) combined for a 6-1 victory at the No. 1 flight over Adam Chan and Danilo Vukotic.

"Greg and Thomas, as well as Andrey and Matt, got off to great starts in doubles," said Navy head coach Chris Garner. "They were able to keep the momentum to secure the doubles point."

Completing the sweep was Navy's No. 2 team of Krishna Jana (Sr., Seabrook, Texas) and Zach Jennings (Fr., Snellville, Ga.) with its 7-5 victory over Pedro Carvalho and Diogo Garnel.

The lead grew to 2-0 when the first singles match finished, a 6-3, 6-2 victory by Jana over Carvalho at the No. 3 flight. Jennings then posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory in his No. 4 singles match against Chan to increase the margin to 3-0.

After a win by FDU's Salomon Koster at No. 6 singles made the score 3-1, Pecor clinched the overall victory for the Mids with his 6-3, 6-2 win over Quintana at the No. 1 flight. Earning the final point for the Mids was Durham when he closed out his No. 2 singles match against Vukotic in a third-set tiebreaker (10-4).

"In singles," said Garner, "Krishna and Zach jumped out to early leads with steady all-around play. After taking their first sets they would both gain early advantages in the second sets with very aggressive ground games. Both kept the pressure on their opponents all the way to the end of the match. Thomas would clinch the match in straight sets by playing some great defense to go along with some timely volley winners."

Navy will play a pair of matches Friday afternoon (2:30 p.m.) in Annapolis against Temple and Coppin State.
