March 7, 2017 INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Navy junior 197-pound Steban Cervantes (Jr / Chula Vista, Calif.) was among the 53 wrestlers who on Tuesday were named at-large qualifiers to compete in the 2017 NCAA Wrestling Championship slated for March 16-18 at Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo. The 53 join the 277 wrestlers who qualified automatically through their respective conference tournaments over the past two weekends.
The at-large selections were made by the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee using the following selection criteria: head-to-head competition, quality wins, results against common opponents, winning percentage, rating percentage index, coaches ranking and qualifying event placement.
Cervantes placed eighth at last weekend's EIWA Championship and owns a 22-11 record this season. He is one of six Navy wrestlers to reach the 20-win milestone this season. He will join Navy teammates 141-pound Jared Prince (Fr / Safety Harbor, Fla.), 174-pound Jadaen Bernstein (Jr / Glen Gardner, N.J.) and 184-pound Michael Coleman (Jr / Hudson, Ohio), who received automatic berths into the tournament by way of their placement at the EIWA Championship, in their quest to win a national championship. Prince, Coleman and Cervantes will be making their NCAA Tournament debut, while Bernstein is making his third trip in three seasons.
The NCAA will unveil the brackets for the 2017 NCAA Wrestling Championship on Wednesday at 6:00 PM (ET).
