ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy intercollegiate sailing team qualified for the ICSA Coed Nationals with its second-place performance at the MAISA Coed Championship for America Trophy this past weekend at Cornell.

The America Trophy was Navy's final event of the regular season and the event featured the top 18 teams in the MAISA conference. In addition to serving as the conference championship, this event also determines the nine teams that will represent MAISA at the ICSA Coed Nationals.

The first day of the event featured overcast skies and variable winds, with temperatures in the 50s and 60s. As the wind cams and went, the sailing proved very challenging throughout the day. Navy sailed consistently and ended the day in second overall, very close to first and third. Sunday dawned to more overcast and chilly weather and no wind whatsoever. Throughout the morning, light northerly breezes filled in from time to time and we got in a few races, but there were also many delays without wind. In the afternoon, the sky cleared up, the temperature began to rise and a really nice 10-15 knot breeze filled in from the south to finish out the regatta.

Navy had a good afternoon and separated from most of the fleet, but unfortunately, the team from Hobart and William Smith Colleges was on fire and pulled away for the win. Navy wound up second overall and comfortably move on to the nationals. After qualifying for Women's and Team Race Nationals earlier this spring, Navy will be competing in all three of the spring national championships for the fifth year in a row.

Patrick Snow, Mary Morocco and Brittney Slook won the A division while Gary Prieto, Ana Mier and Molly Robertson were fourth in B.
