ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy men's soccer team will open the 2017 season at Manhattan on Friday at 7:00 PM at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, N.Y. Live statistics and live video will be available.
Navy's Tim O'Donohue begins his second season as the head coach of the Midshipman program. O'Donohue enters the 2017 season with a career winning percentage of .808 (170-30-27), which is the ninth-best winning percentage in NCAA history.
Senior Brock Dudley will serve as the team captain of the 2017 team. Dudley, a holding midfielder, was named to the All-Patriot League Second Team in both 2015 and 2016.
Senior Mac Burke also returns as Navy's starting goalkeeper. Burke led the Patriot League in goals-against average (1.05) in 2016. Burke was in goal for every minute of the 2016 season and set a program record for the most minutes played by a goalkeeper with 1,713.
Dudley and Burke were each named to the Preseason All-Patriot League Team earlier this week.
Senior forward Daniel Zaremba was Navy's leading scorer last year with nine points on three goals and three assists. Sophomore defender Andrew Hopkins was Navy's third-leading scorer with five points. He scored two goals and had one assist.
Sophomore defender Diego Manrique returns after starting 18 games for Navy as a freshman last season. Manrique was twice named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week.
Navy returns eight players who played at least 1,000 minutes last fall in Burke, Dudley, Hopkins, Manrique, Zaremba, senior midfielder Aubrey Jones, senior defender Thomas Moore and senior defender Dylan Struthers.
Navy was 5-9-4 overall in 2016 and 1-6-2 in the Patriot League. The Mids have been picked to finish eighth in the 2017 Patriot League Preseason Poll.
Navy either tied or played in one-goal games in 16 of its 18 contests in 2016, including in each of the final 15 games of the season.
Navy and Manhattan are meeting for the second time in series history. Navy earned a 3-0 victory over the Jaspers in its 2002 season opener.
Manhattan was recently selected to finish ninth out of 11 teams in the MAAC Preseason Poll. The Jaspers were 2-13-3 overall last season and 2-6-2 in the MAAC. The team was outscored 35-9 last season.
Navy is 6-0-0 all-time against teams in the MAAC.
Navy is 1-2-2 in its last five season openers.
Navy will host NJIT in its home opener on Monday, Aug. 28 at 7:00 PM.
