Intercollegiate Sailing Competes in Three Regattas

Sept. 18, 2017

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy intercollegiate sailing team hit the road this past weekend to compete in three different regattas. Unfortunately, light winds up and down the East Coast made for a lot of waiting and some tricky sailing all around.

The event that featured the best conditions was the Nevins Trophy at the Merchant Marine Academy. This is the first major Interconference Regatta in the Mid-Atlantic and 20 teams from around the country were in attendance for the first big test of the fall. While the wind was certainly light and there was current to battle all weekend, the conditions remained sailable much of the time and 15 races per division were completed.

Navy showed some real strength and scored many good finishes, but also suffered some setbacks, highlighting areas to improve upon over the course of the year. The Midshipmen finished sixth overall. Gary Prieto and Ana Mier came in seventh in A division. Peter Hogan and Kelly Milliken finished second in B and Max Guerriero was 13th in C.

Two other Navy teams competed in the N.Y. Maritime Fall Open right down the road from Kings Point. With only one fleet of boats and not as much wind, they didn't get in quite as much racing as the Nevins, but still were able to complete a quality event. Spotty wind and strong current challenged the fleet and consistent finishes proved hard to come by. Even though the event was coed, Navy chose to field one coed team and one all women's team. Navy's coed team wound up sixth overall out of 18. Hamrick Morgan and Abigail Richardson finished sixth in A division while Nicholas Gartner and Alyson Wade were seventh in B. Navy's women finished eighth overall. Jessica McJones and Anna Cutler came in 14th in A division while Brittney Slook and Emma Remis were fourth in B.

Navy's furthest away event of the weekend was the Hatch Brown Trophy in Boston. This 20-team event featured most of the top talent in New England, but not a whole lot of wind. In fact, there was so little wind that no racing took place at all on the first day. On Sunday, the fleet waited around for hours and, just when it was beginning to look hopeless a light breeze filled in the afternoon. The organizers quickly ran three races per division before the time limit expired and barely completed an official regatta. Navy sailed inconsistently and finished 12th overall out of 20. Max Brill and Kent Mathes finished fifth in A division. Jimmy Madigan and Karma Richards were 15th in B while Connor Bayless and Holly Koerwer came in 13th in C.
