Navy Takes on Army in Annual Star Match at Army-Navy Cup VII on Friday

Kickoff from Talen Energy Stadium is set for 7 p.m.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy men's soccer team (1-9-1, 0-4-0 Patriot League) continues its league schedule on Friday night at 7 p.m. against Army (4-6-1, 1-3-0 PL) in the seventh annual Army-Navy Cup at Talen Energy Stadium. Friday's match is a Star Match between the two programs and is part of the Army-Navy Star Series, presented by USAA. 
 
The men's soccer match on Friday will be one of four Army-Navy Star competitions this weekend. Through the first three Star competitions in the Army-Navy Star Series, presented by USAA, Army has earned two Stars (men's golf and sprint football), while Navy won the last Star in volleyball. The Black Knights and Midshipmen will also have Star competitions in women's soccer, women's cross country and men's cross country this weekend.
 
Last Time Out
In Navy's last match, it dropped a narrow 1-0 road contest at Lehigh -- who leads the Patriot League standings. The Midshipmen and Mountain Hawks played a scoreless first 45 minutes of play, but an early second-half goal from Josh Luchini gave Lehigh a 1-0 lead in the 50th minute. Will Smith made five saves for the Mountain Hawks and posted his seventh shutout of the season, which ranks fourth in the NCAA.
 
Phillip Gustafson paced the Mids on offense with four shots in the match, while Bayne Bentley came off the bench with two shots on goal. Navy's backline came up big to keep Navy in the match with a pair of saves off the goal line. Tyler Fahning made six saves in his second collegiate start.
 
The Midshipmen
Navy comes into the Army-Navy Cup with a record of 1-9-1 and has dropped its last six matches. The Midshipmen are also looking for their first league point after suffering four losses to start their Patriot League slate.
 
Jacob Williams has guided the Navy offense this season with three goals and six points. Diego Manrique is just behind with two goals after both Williams and Manrique notched goals during the Midshipmen's last home game against American. Fahning has started the last two matches for the Midshipmen making nine saves and recording a save percentage of .692.
 
Scouting Army
Army comes into the matchup on Friday night with a record of 4-6-1 overall and is 1-3-0 in the Patriot League. Last time out, the Black Knights suffered a 2-0 loss to Loyola. Over its last five matches, Army has gone 1-4-0 with the lone victory coming at home against Lafayette, 1-0.
 
Keenan O'Shea has been the catalyst for the Black Knights' offense with a total of 14 points. O'Shea's 14 points are third most in the Patriot League, while his five goals are tied for the most in the league. Eric Whiteman has chipped in with three goals and Army has had six different goals scorers this season. In goal, Justin Stoll has started each match to post two shutouts and a save percentage of .667.
 
Army-Navy Cup
The Army-Navy Cup enters its seventh installment in Chester, Pa., and has been held at Talen Energy Stadium (formerly PPL Park) since the Army-Navy Cup was established in 2012. Over the previous six events, Army and Navy are all square at 2-2-2. 
 
The Midshipmen and Black Knights played to draws in the inaugural Cup in 2012 and the most recent edition in 2017. Navy earned back-to-back overtime victories in 2013 and 2014, while Army won back-to-back one-goal decisions in 2015 and 2016. In the first six Army-Navy Cup's, each team has scored four goals in the series.
The Army-Navy Cup produced the third-highest attended collegiate soccer match last season with 8,142 fans in attendance. In 2014, 10,168 fans attended the Army-Navy Cup and the 2016 edition had an attendance of 10,092.
 
All-Time Series Against Army
In the all-time series between the two rivals, Navy holds a 40-29-15 edge over Army. In Star Matches, the Midshipmen hold a 40-26-14 mark over the Black Knights. The two programs have met at least once each season since 1938. Each side has controlled their home field with Navy posting a record of 23-10-4 at home, while Army is 15-14-9 in West Point against the Midshipmen.
 
Navy is looking for its first victory over Army since 2014. From 2009 to 2014, the Midshipmen held a record of 5-0-1 over the Black Knights. Navy holds the longest win streak in the rivalry with 10-straight victories over Army from 1955 to 1964.
 
Opening kick for Army-Navy Cup VII is slated for 7 p.m. on Friday night from Talen Energy Stadium. Friday night is also the annual Star Match between Army and Navy, which is part of the Army-Navy Star Series, presented by USAA.
