Navy returns to action next weekend with four competitions

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team had five teams competing in three regattas along the East Coast this past weekend.

The Midshipmen had three teams competing in the two fleets of the St. Mary's Oyster Bowl. Each of the fleets had nine teams competing in the combined divisions. The Oyster Bowl featured puffy and shifty winds on the first day, which resulted in tight racing. There was no wind and no racing during the final day of competition.

Navy was on the only team with two teams competing in one fleet, where both teams had strong competitions and finished second and third overall. On the second-place team, Parker Loftus (Jr., Chatham, Mass.) and Kimmie Leonard (Fr., Annapolis, Md.) finished second overall in the combined division, while Max Brill (Jr., La Jolla, Calif.) and Ana Mier (Sr., San Juan, Puerto Rico) placed seventh. On the third-place team, JC Hermus (Fr., Bellport, N.Y.) and Kent Mathes (Jr., Anacortes, Wash.) placed third and Connor Bayless (So., Annapolis, Md.) and Sarah Barkley (Sr., New York, N.Y.) finished eighth.

In the second fleet, the Midshipmen were fourth overall and the duo of Nicholas Gartner (Jr., St. Thomas, Virgin Islands) and Sally Johnson (Fr., Richmond, Va.) led the way with a fifth-place finish. Gray Benson (Fr., Oxford, Md.) and Holly Koerwer (So., Shrewsbury, N.J.) were ninth.

In the final rounds of the women's showcase regattas this weekend, Navy was seeded in the top regatta at Brown this past weekend after its strong performance at the Jen Harris Navy Fall Women's Regatta two weeks back. The field consisted of top-18 teams and they competed on the Narragansett Bay. Following an up and down weekend in a difficult fleet, the Midshipmen finished 17th overall. Jessica McJones (Jr., Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Kelly Milliken (So., Mooresville, N.C.) finished 17th in the A Division, while Olivia de Olazarra (Fr., Miami, Fla.) and Emma Remis (Jr., Rochester, N.Y.) placed 13th in the B division.

At the Kings Point Dinghy Open, the 12-team regatta was only able to compete on one day. The Midshipmen sailed well at the event and just missed out on the top spot and placed second overall. Sean Linden (So., Brightwaters, N.Y.) and Madeline Pruzan (So., Roanoke, Va.) finished third in A Division and Jack Carminati (Fr., Youngstown, N.Y.) and Lilly Meyers (So., Erie, Pa.) placed third in the B division.

Navy has another busy weekend coming up with four events on tap. The Midshipmen host the Truxtun Umsted Regatta and then hits the road for the MAISA Fall Women's Regatta, MAISA Coed Showcase and Central Late Fall Regatta.
