Matchup of PL's Top-Two Teams Set for Saturday Morning

The winner of Saturday's contest controls destiny for regular season title

10/19/2018 9:18:00 AM

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - A showdown of the two teams atop the Patriot League women's soccer table is on tap for the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility this Saturday morning. The final regular season home game for the Navy women's soccer team will see the Mids (10-4-3, 6-1 PL) host the Colgate Raiders (10-2-3, 6-0-1 PL) in a showdown for the top spot in the league. The winner of Saturday's 11 AM will control its destiny in the battle for the regular season league crown and hosting responsibilities for the upcoming 2018 Patriot League Tournament. Navy comes in as winner of eight of its last nine games, while Colgate is 9-0-2 over its last 11 contests.

The game will be live streamed by Navy on the Patriot League Network with live stats accompanying the broadcast as well.

Senior Day
Navy will recognize its seven-member Class of 2019 prior to the start of Saturday's contest.  The pre-match ceremony for Mary August, Ash Fairow, MaryKate Helms, Anabell Motley, Eleanor Pratt, Kayla Robinson and Karli Sottung will begin at 10:50 a.m.

NAAA Athlete of the Week, presented by Northrup Grumman: Eleanor Pratt
Earlier this week, senior Eleanor Pratt was selected as the Naval Academy Athletic Association Athlete of the Week, presented by Northrop Grumman. Pratt was the hero for Navy in the Mids' dramatic come-from-behind victory over the Army Black Knights last Friday night. Down 1-0 with under eight minutes to go Pratt lofted a free kick into the box that after a series of passes resulted in Cadie Higginson's game-tying goal at 82:18 (Pratt would've been a third assist). With the score now knotted at 1-1, Pratt earned Navy the 2-1 win with an outstanding individual effort that saw her juke an Army defender and rip a curling shot from outside the 18-yard box into the upper-90 at 89:16. The game-winning goal was the second of 2018 for the senior.

Last Time Out
Navy came out on Wednesday night and gained three more important points in the standings with a 1-0 win on the road at Lafayette. Scoreless through the opening 45 minutes, the Mids (10-4-3, 6-1 PL) received a game-winning goal from Cadie Higginson in the 48th minute to defeat the Leopards (4-11, 1-6 PL) at Oaks Stadium.

Wind and defense continued to control the majority of the action on Wednesday as the game went into halftime with the score deadlocked at 0-0. A testament to the defenses curtailing of quality offensive looks was a glance at the box score that saw Navy with just two shots, while Lafayette was unable to register even one shot.

Coming out of the locker room after intermission, the Mids quickly broke the stalemate 3:17 into the second half when Baseley McClaskey navigated the left wing and darted into the box before slotting a square pass to a waiting Higginson, who one-timed a shot into the back of the net. The goal was Higginson's second in two games, while McClaskey's assist was her seventh helper of 2018.

In the Navy 1-0 victory, the Mids outshot the Leopards, 6-1, with a 2-1 advantage in shots on goal. Navy recorded three corner kicks versus two for Lafayette.

Navy vs. Colgate
Saturday will be the 36th meeting between the two schools in a series that began in Navy's second year of varsity existence in 1994 ... In that Oct. 16, 1994 matchup, Colgate took the contest by a 3-0 margin ... The Raiders would build up a 6-0 lead in the series over the first four years before extending the margin out to 9-1 following a postseason win over the Mids in 1999 ... Navy started leveling out the series in the second half of the 00's with five straight wins between 2006 and 2008, including two victories in tournament action ... 2017 Recaps
The Mids and Raiders met twice in 2017 with Navy going 2-0. During the regular season the two teams met in Hamilton, N.Y. on Oct. 21 and saw Navy score itself a key road victory over Colgate by the count of 2-1. Both teams came into the matchup undefeated over their past 10 games, with Navy at 9-0-1 and Colgate at 8-0-2 during that span. The visiting Mids used first half goals by Ash Fairow and Alex Jackson to knock off the Raiders.

In the Patriot League Semifinals on Nov. 3, the Mids rode a red-hot Ash Fairow, who recorded just the third hat trick in the 27-year history of the conference tournament, to the tune of 3-0 victory over Raiders at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. Fairow put Navy up 1-0 in the seventh minute before extended the host's lead to 2-0 in the 25th minute of action. She completed her hat trick in the 84th minute as she streaked to the goal on a breakaway. For the game, Navy outshot Colgate, 15-11, with a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal.
