Mids Close Fall Season with Third-Place Showing at Lehigh Invitational

BETHLEHEM, Pa.
—  Led by reigning Patriot League Individual Medalist Charlie Musto's (So, Sterling, Va.) 2-over par 74 in the final round of the 13-team Lehigh Invitational, the Navy's men's golf team shot the third-lowest round over the final 18 holes to place third in its fall finale with a 33-over par 609 (306-303). Musto, meanwhile, paved the way for the Mids with his first top-five finish of the season.

After opening the tournament with the eighth-best mark (311), Iona schooled the field in the final round with a 6-over par 294 to take the team title with a 29-over par 605. Monmouth was leading after the opening round, but struggled in the second round to fall short of Iona by two strokes with a 607 (295-312). Navy finished third (609), while Bucknell (610) and Siena (611) rounded out the top five.

Meanwhile, Lehigh's Owen Quinn was sensational throughout the weekend and in particular the opening round. Quinn turned in a 4-under par 68 to take the early lead and closed out capturing individual medalist honors with a 3-over par 75 in the second to finish 1-under (143) for the tournament. He owned a 4-stroke advantage over second-place Josh Madarang of Fordham, Cole Berger of Lafayette and teammate Michael Tanaka, who was playing as an individual.

Musto led the calvary of Mids who finished among the field's top 20. The second-year standout put together rounds of 75 and 74 to finish 5-over and tied for fifth-place. His 2-over par 74 was the Mids' low score in the final round and tied as Navy's best round of the tournament.

Junior Thomas Garbee (Asheville, N.C.) finished just a stroke away from capturing his second top-10 finish of the fall season. He opened the tournament with a 2-over par 74, but feel back in the final round with a 77. His 7-over par 151 stood as the 11th-best mark of the tournament. Meanwhile, team captain Paul Mauer (Sr, Eagleville, Pa.) captured his third-career top-20 finish with an 18th-place showing at the Lehigh Invitational. He put together rounds of 77 and 76 and shot an eagle three on the par five 15th hole.

Rounding out the field for Navy were Ben Burton (Fr, Charleston, S.C.) in 33rd with a 12-over par 156 and Michael Brennan (So, Locust Valley, N.Y.) in 58th with an 18-over par 162.

"This event was an excellent way for us to close out our fall season at a championship venue," said Navy head coach Pat Owen. "We competed against a number of Patriot League schools and feel good about our plans for the spring campaign."
