Rifle Sweeps Road Trip with Victory at Ole Miss

The Midshipmen move to 3-0 in the Great American Rifle Conference

OXFORD, Miss. – The 11th-ranked Navy rifle team capped off its first road trip of the 2018 season with a 4,668-4,656 victory over No. 16 Ole Miss on Sunday at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center.

The Midshipmen (5-1, 3-0 Great American Rifle Conference) outscored the Rebels (0-3, 0-2 GARC) by 12 points in smallbore to capture its third-straight GARC victory. Navy compiled 2,311 points in smallbore compared to 2,299 points from Ole Miss. Both teams posted scores of 2,357 in air rifle to round out the event.

"We had another solid day on the range, shooting our second highest score of the season," head coach Mike Anti said. "As a team we have been very consistent in scoring, just waiting for that big score when everyone is on at the same time.

"After an off day yesterday against Memphis, Kestrel Kuhne came today to lead the team to victory against Ole Miss. We also had great performances from Daniel Enger in the air rifle event and freshman Michael Zanti in the smallbore event."

Kestrel Kuhne (Jr., Everett, Pa.) paced the Midshipmen on Sunday with a combined score of 1,173. She led the field with a 593 in air rifle and finished second in smallbore with a 580, where she finished only behind her teammate Michael Zanti (Fr., Norfolk, Va.) with a 581. Zanti racked up the second-best aggregate score with a total of 1,168.

Zanti and Kuhne were the only two shooters in the field to score at least 580 in smallbore. Torrance Kang (So., Columbia, Md.) posted a score of 576 in smallbore and Josh Watson (Sr., Enterprise, Ala.) notched the final counting score for Navy with a 574.

Kuhne continued her strong performance on Sunday and fired a 593 in air rifle against the Rebels, which matches her season high and was one point off her career best of 594. Daniel Enger (So., Walla Walla, Wash.) posted his career-best mark in the event with a 592 and finished with an aggregate score of 1,160 after he set a new season best of 1,163 on Saturday against Memphis.

Navy's final two counting scores in air rifle came from Mark Amdahl (Fr., Albuquerque, N.M.) and Gabriella Mayes (Fr., Rio Rancho, N.M.) with matching 586s. As a non-starter, Zanti notched a 587 in air rifle to finish third on the team.

Ole Miss had five individuals reach aggregate marks of at least 1,160 compared to three Midshipmen.

Navy is idle this coming week before hosting the President's Trophy Match on Saturday, November 3. The Midshipmen will host service academy rivals Air Force, Army and Coast Guard at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range.
