ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy's intercollegiate sailing team competed in four regattas this past weekend and posted two runner-up finishes.
The Midshipmen competed at the MAISA Fall Women's Championship, where 16 teams competed at Cornell. The first day of competition featured very little win before a cold front brought in heavy winds and snow flurries on Sunday.
Only 10 races were completed in each division and the overall standings fluctuated greatly with each race. At the completion of the regatta, Navy placed fifth overall with
Jessica McJones (Jr., Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.),
Anna Cutler (Jr., Hamilton, Bermuda) and
Kelly Milliken (So., Mooresville, N.C.) finishing sixth in the A division, while
Olivia de Olazarra (Fr., Miami, Fla.),
Brittney Slook (Jr., Middletown, N.J.) and
Emma Remis (Jr., Rochester, N.Y.) placed third in the B division.
This weekend was also the final weekend of showcase competition for the ICSA with a pair of coed regattas at Navy and St. Mary's. The top 18 teams from around the country competed at St. Mary's and the next 18 competed at Navy's Truxtun Umsted Regatta. The Midshipmen were also able to field a team in both events as the host, even though they were seeded in the top 18.
At St. Mary's, the conditions were good with a strong field. There were shifty winds from the southwest at five to 12 knots on Saturday and a cold front overnight brought winds up to 15-25 knots on Sunday. With a strong fleet, Navy had its ups and down where small mistakes were very costly. The Midshipmen placed 14th overall with
Parker Loftus (Jr., Chatham, Mass.),
Sally Johnson (Fr., Richmond, Va.) and
Bartholomew Winn (So., Carlisle, Pa.) coming in 14th in the A division and
JC Hermus (Fr., Bellport, N.Y.),
Ana Mier (Sr., San Juan, Puerto Rico) and
Kent Mathes (Jr., Anacortes, Wash.) placing ninth in the B division.
The conditions at the Truxtun Umsted Regatta were very similar to the ones at St. Mary's, but the wind was a touch quicker at Navy's home event. A total of 19 teams competed and Navy was battling for the lead throughout the weekend. However, St. Mary's pulled away late and the Midshipmen placed second overall.
Max Brill (Jr., La Jolla, Calif.),
Kimmie Leonard (Fr., Annapolis, Md.) and
Nicholas Gartner (Jr., St. Thomas, Virgin Islands) finished seventh overall in the A division. In the B division,
Connor Bayless (So., Annapolis, Md.),
Sarah Barkley (Sr., New York City, N.Y.) and
Sean Linden (So., Brightwaters, N.Y.) won the division.
To finished off the weekend, Navy took part in the Central Late Fall Regatta hosted by Washington College. The conditions were similar to the ones at Navy and St. Mary's, but the regatta ran into a unique problem that when the wind is too quick from the northwest, the water level gets too low to sail. The issue forced the competition to abandon racing early on Sunday. In the 18-team field, the Midshipmen placed second.
Louis Margay (Fr., Chester Springs, Pa.) and
Lilly Meyers (So., Erie, Pa.) placed second in the A division, while
Jack Carminati (Fr., Youngstown, N.Y.) and
Lucy Ackerman (Fr., Lake Forest Park, Wash.) were the runners-up in the B division.
Navy concludes its fall regular-season schedule this coming weekend with the War Memorial Regatta on Saturday and Sunday.
