Bucknell Invitational Final Results
LEWISBURG, Pa. — Led by
Thomas Garbee's (Jr, Asheville, N.C.) 2-under par 68 in Tuesday's final round of the Bucknell Invitational, the Navy men's golf team covered the 36-hole tournament with a 21-over par 581 (287-294) to tie for fifth alongside Fairleigh Dickinson. Garbee paved the way for the Mids with a career-best fifth-place finish overall.
Temple set a tournament record with a 4-over par 564 (280-284) en route to earning the team title, ousting defending-champion Wayne State by three strokes. Bucknell finished third at 573, followed by Iona (577), Fairleigh Dickinson (581) and Navy (581) in the 18-team field.
Meanwhile, La Salle's Dragon Theam made only one bogey over the two rounds and claimed medalist honors with a tournament-record 7-under par 133. He shot 66 on Tuesday to edge out Temple's John Barone by one stroke. Temple's Trey Wren was third at -3, followed by Bucknell's Raftery at -1. Iona's Justin Burkhamer and Garbee both finished at even-par 140.
All six of Navy's players, including rookie
Ben Burton (Charleston, S.C.) who took part in the tournament as an individual, opened the competition within two strokes of one another. Senior
Matthew Starobin (Davidsonville, Md.) paced the team with a 1-over 71, while Garbee, freshmen
Chad Deegan (Costa, Mesa, Calif.) and Burton, along with
Michael Brennan (So, Locust Valley, N.Y.) carded 2-over par 72s. Sophomore
Ward Wilkinson (Ashland, Va.), meanwhile, posted a 3-over par 73.
In Tuesday's final round, Garbee pushed up into a tie for fifth thanks to his 2-under par 68 to finish even (140) for the tournament. It was Garbee's first career top-five finish, bettering his previous mark of eighth place at last year's Legacy Intercollegiate where he tied for eighth with a 4-over par 220.
Deegan, making his collegiate debut, improved upon his first round with a 1-over par 71 to place 14th with a 143.
Starobin took 36th with a 148 (71-77), Brennan finished 48th with a 150 (72-78) and Wilkinson placed 56th with a 151 (73-78).
Burton, who like Deegan was making his first collegiate appearance, turned in a 4-over par 74 in the second round to place 25th with a 146.
Navy will close out the fall portion of its schedule next week with a pair of tournaments. The Mids will compete at the Georgetown Intercollegiate next Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 15 and 16 before taking part in the fall finale on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 19 and 20 at the Lehigh Invitational.
