Durham and Ton Have Success at National Invite

| Box Score 3 LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. –– Navy's Greg Durham (Jr., Melbourne Beach, Fla.) and Andrew Ton (So., Milpitas, Calif.) improved upon their results of a year ago when the pair returned to the Lakewood Ranch-Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic outside of Sarasota, Fla., this weekend.

"This was an incredible event for Andrew and Gregory to play with so many strong teams and players involved in the event," said Navy head coach Chris Garner.  "Dick Vitale, as well as the entire Lakewood Ranch Country Club staff, plays an active role in the event and making all the players feel welcome.  Mr. Vitale also makes sure everyone knows how important it is to give back with the event supporting Pediatric Cancer Research."

The Navy duo opened this year's 16-team doubles draw with a 6-0 victory over the Florida Gulf Coast tandem of Juan Montes and Felipe Ramirez.  The Mids were then edged in the quarterfinals by Florida State's Richard Thongoana and Chase Wood by the score of 9-7.  Thongoana and Wood won their next two matches to be crowned the event's doubles champions.

Ton was paired against Thongoana in the first round of the 32-player singles draw, and in this match Ton came out ahead, winning by scores of 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8).  Ton's tournament would end in the round of 16 with a narrow 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 1-0 (10-8) loss to Notre Dame's William Howells, who would go on to reach the singles final.

Durham lost a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Florida's Lukas Greif in his first-round singles match, then fell, 9-7, to Oklahoma State's Emile Hudd in the first round of the consolation draw.  Hudd reached the finals of the consolation draw.

"On day one," said Garner, "Andrew and Gregory played a terrific doubles set, knocking off a team from FGCU.  In singles, Andrew had a great win defeating a good player in Thongoana and Gregory had a great experience playing against one of the top freshmen in the country in Greif.

"In the second round, Andrew lost a close match that could have gone either way against a strong player in Howells.  Similar to the singles earlier in the day, the doubles match was decided by a small margin. Florida State jumped out to a big lead, but Andrew and Gregory had a terrific comeback.  After Navy evened the match at 7-7, Florida State played two strong games to close out the match."

Durham and Ton lost in a tiebreaker in the first round of the doubles bracket a year ago, and Ton reached the second round of the consolation singles draw.

Navy will conclude its fall season this weekend when the Mids play host to a tournament Friday through Sunday.
