Mids Close Regular Season with Sweep Over Franklin & Marshall

Feb. 11, 2018

Final Stats

LANCASTER, Pa. - The 16th-ranked Navy squash team cruised past longtime rival Franklin & Marshall, 9-0, Sunday afternoon in the Mids' regular-season finale. It was a huge victory by the Mids as the 19th-ranked Diplomats came into the match having won nine of the previous 11 meetings against Navy.

Michael Kacergis (Malvern, Pa.) won a marathon match against F&M junior Silvio Soom at the #2 spot on the ladder. Kacergis won games one and three, but Soom managed to tie it up with an 11-8 win in the fourth. The Navy sophomore was able to wear his foe down and cruised to the game-five win, 11-2.

Junior Jamie Kjorlien (Greenwich, Conn.) took a 3-1 victory, but three of his four games were forced into extra points. Kjorlien and junior Ricardo Machado split the first two matches, but Kjorlien would pull out the win with back-to-back 12-10 scores. Heading into the College Squash Association Team Championship in two weeks, Kjorlien needs just one win to move into Navy's all-time top 25 wins record book.

Kjorlien has three teammates who are already part of that top 25 list, including senior Jack Herold (Chicago, Ill.) who moved into 15th on the list. He captured his 65th career victory with a 3-1 win over F&M's top player, freshman Sanjay Jeeva, on Sunday.

Junior Senen Ubina (Greenwich, Conn.), meanwhile, is just one win shy of 20 for the season and thanks to a 3-0 victory over F&M junior Samm Fulton, he moved into 19th on the Mids' all-time wins list alongside Brad Seidel (2007-11).

Ubina's classmate, Dylan Sweeney (New York, N.Y.), was also on the move, capturing his 57th career win with a 3-0 victory over F&M sophomore King Bassett. Sweeney is now 57-21 over three seasons.

Rookie Jack Lentz (Philadelphia, Pa.) earned a 3-1 victory over sophomore Yannis Senkel to post his team-high tying 19th win of the year, while senior Sam McCartney (Chicago, Ill.) has won four straight matches and is three away from reaching 50 for his career.

Navy will use the next two weeks to prepare for the CSA Team Championship slated for Feb. 23-25 at Trinity.
