Navy Finishes Second at All-Academy Gymnastics Championship

Feb. 10, 2018

SAN ANTONIO - One of the most competitive and closest All-Academy Championships in recent history was held on Saturday in San Antonio. The three-team showdown between the service academies was decided by a total of 4.3 points between the first place Air Force Falcons (403.85) and the third place Army Black Knights (399.55). Navy ended up in second place with a score of 400.2. The competition was part of the San Antonio Invitational and held at the Concepcion Sports Complex.

Five top-three individual results led the Mids on Saturday. Frank Bradley's (So., McLean, Va.) vault performance highlighted Navy's effort as he earned the event win with a score of 14.45. Ryan Orce (So., Gainesville, Fla.) and Christian Correale (Jr., Harrisburg, Pa.) each placed second on their respective events of pommel horse and parallel bars. Noah Beeman (Sr., Dayton, Ohio) notched a third place on the high bar, while Lucas Beltran (So., Corpus Christi, Texas) matched with a third on the parallel bars.

Navy's vault lineup produced the most lucrative results at the championship with 70.75 points. Behind Bradley's event win, Travis Keller (Fr., Centreville, Va.) tied for fourth place with a score of 14.25. Andy Jones (Sr., Reading, Mass.) continued Navy's quality results with a 14.15 score that ranked sixth overall.

The Mids also placed three gymnasts in the top-six on the parallel bars. Correale led Navy's parallel bar team with a 13.2-point outcome. Beltran was 0.05 points behind his teammate with a score of 13.15. Trevor North (So., Johnstown, Ohio) tallied the sixth-best score on the apparatus at 12.95. He tied with Air Force's Zack Polen.

The high bar rotation saw Navy place three in the top-seven with Beeman spearheading the attack with a third-place score of 13.7. Ryan McVay (Fr., Roseville, Calif.) tied for fifth place with Army's Elliott Herman at 13.25. Orce came in 0.1 points shy of McVay with a 13.15-point effort to tie for seventh. Will Longwe (So., Stoughton, Mass.) made it four in the top-nine for Navy with a respective score of 12.9.

The pommel horse and rings rotations saw two Midshipmen athletes in the top-eight. Orce and Jake Carlson (Fr., Lakeville, Mass.) placed second and eighth respectively on the pommel horse with scores of 13.8 and 13.4. On the rings, Tanner West (So., Cypress, Texas) and Correale were Navy's top pair as West ranked fourth at 13.75, while Correale was tied for seventh at 13.55.

On the floor exercise, Jones finished in fourth to lead Navy. The senior was awarded a score of 13.95 for his routine.

For the third straight meet, McVay competed in the all-around. The freshman netted a six-event score of 77.6 courtesy of a 13.2 on the floor exercise, a 12.7 on the pommel horse, a 13.1 on the rings, a 13.55 on the vault, an 11.8 on the parallel bars and a 13.25 on the high bar.

"The guys fought hard tonight in an extremely close competition," remarked head coach Kip Simons. "The pride of this team and our athletes was evident as they battled against their brothers from Army and Air Force."

Navy will next be in action as a team on Saturday, Feb. 24 at the University of Oklahoma. The Mids will take on the defending NCAA Champions in a 7 p.m. meet at McCasland Field House.
