ANNAPOLIS, Md. â€"â€" The Navy men's tennis team split a pair of 5-2 decisions on Friday with the Mids (17-8) going on the road to defeat Hampton (0-7) and lose to Norfolk State (5-2).
The matches were the first in 10 days for the Mids.
Navy's match against Hampton saw the Pirates win two of the three doubles matches to earn the first point of the afternoon. The Mids then won the first set in five of the six singles matches to gain an early advantage. Navy would win all five of those contests, with three of them decided in three sets.
Gabriel Pilones (So., Bradenton, Fla.) posted a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 2 singles, and Romesh Kahatapitiya (Fr., Virginia Beach, Va. won a 6-1, 6-2 match at the No. 3 flight for Navy's pair of straight-set wins.
The remaining matches saw Andrey Majkic (Sr., Jacksonville, Fla.) and Cameron Kirkpatrick (Jr., Menlo Park, Calif.) win at Nos. 4 and 6 singles, respectively, with the identical third-set score of 6-3, and Joshua Martin (Sr., Foley, Ala.) post a victory at No. 5 singles in a third-set tiebreaker. The score of that breaker was 7-5.
"Hampton played well in doubles to take the point," said Navy associate head coach John Moreland. "We were able to get a quick start in singles to turn the momentum. "Romesh did a good job to secure his singles match quickly and even the score. Andrey and Josh did a good job to close out their matches. Josh's win was a really good ending to the afternoon. He battled back to force the tiebreaker after being down 5-2 in the third set."
Norfolk State also would win the doubles point from Navy as the Spartans won each of the three flights. In singles, Greg Durham (So., Melbourne Beach, Fla.) won a straight-set match at No. 5 singles and Aries Wong (Sr., Bethesda, Md.) recorded a three-set win at the No. 1 flight. The Spartans would win straight-set decisions at Nos. 4 and 6 singles and three-set matches at the Nos. 2 and 3 flights to secure the overall victory.
"It was great for us to play a match outdoors," said Navy head coach Chris Garner. "Norfolk State played really well. We competed well as the guys began to adjust to the conditions."
The Mids will open their Patriot League season Sunday when they play host to Boston U. at 10 a.m. in the Tose Family Tennis Center.
Navy's additional match slated for Sunday at Rider was cancelled.
