IC Sailing Places Third at the Georgetown Team Race

March 5, 2018

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy intercollegiate sailing team was scheduled to sail in three events in the Chesapeake region this past weekend. However, high winds Friday and Saturday led to very low water levels and unsailable conditions and all three events were cancelled on Saturday. The Tom Noble Team Race at Washington College was cancelled all together, but Navy was able to sail on Sunday at the ODU Spring Women's Regatta and at the Georgetown Team Race.

Both events were still windy on Sunday, but the racing was good. In Georgetown, Navy was competing in the first event of the MAISA Team Racing League. The top-12 teams in the conference are scheduled for in conference events over the next four weeks to determine which teams advance to the conference championship.

With the shortened schedule for this past weekend, the event was left with only one round to determine the final standings, so the pressure was on in every race. Navy got off to a slow start and dropped its first race to NY Maritime, but bounced back and went on a winning streak after that.

A win in the last race of the event against Cornell would have ensured the Midshipmen at least a tie for first overall. avy led around the course, but the race was close. The Mids solidified their lead on the last leg and looked poised to cruise across the line for victory when confusion set in and two Navy boats collided at the finish, handing the race to Cornell and dropping Navy to third overall out of six. Gary Prieto, Peter Hogan, Ana Mier, Max Brill, Kent Mathes and Kelly Milliken competed in all races while Jimmy Madigan, Sarah Barkley, Parker Loftus and Emma Remis were on hand to sail if the opportunity permitted.

The team will return to Georgetown next weekend for the John Jackson Team Race, another league event, looking to bounce back.

The other regatta that sailed on Sunday was the ODU Women's Regatta. 18 teams were originally slated to compete, but travel complications and teams dropping out due to the weather meant that only 10 teams made it to the course on Sunday. An impressive nine races were sailed per division in breezy conditions.

Navy wound up sixth overall. Jessica McJones, Karma Richards and Anna Cutler finished seventh in A division while Brittney Slook, Anna Cutler and Karma Richards were fourth in B. Holly Koerwer was also on hand, but the wind never lightened up enough to show her skills. The women return home next weekend for the Navy Spring Women's Regatta.
