SALEM, S.C. - The Navy men's golf team closed out action at the Clemson Invitational on Saturday by shooting a 16-over par 304 in the final round and finishing in 10th place with a 51-over par 915.
The Mids opened the final round in 11th place after putting together back-to-back rounds of 302 and 309 on Friday at The Cliffs at Keowee Falls. While Navy skimmed five strokes off its second-round score on Saturday, George Mason (917) fell back in the standings after carding a 24-over par 312 to finish two strokes behind the Mids in 11th. Navy, meanwhile, finished five strokes behind ninth-place Wofford (910).
Boston College (290-279-297=866) held off two-time defending Clemson Invitational champion and 15th-ranked Clemson (295-282-291=868) by two strokes. Meanwhile BC's Christian Cavaliere (68-71-71=210) took medalist honors by four strokes over teammate Matt Naumec (72-65-77=214) and Clemon's Turk Pettit (76-67-71=214).
Junior Griffin Peters (Fountain Hills, Ariz.) led the way for the Mids with a 9-over par 225 (74-77-74) to take 24th. He shot the team's low round in the first and third rounds. Freshman Charlie Musto (Sterling, Va.) turned in a 12-over par 228 (78-74-76) to place 36th, followed by team captain Thomas Fricke (Haymarket, Va.) in 45th with a 233 (74-80-79), Thomas Garbee (Asheville, N.C.) in 50th with a 235 (76-80-79) and Ward Wilkinson (Ashland, Va.) in 56th with a 238 (85-78-75).
Navy's Gold squad is playing host to the 36-hole Navy Spring Invitational today and tomorrow at the Naval Academy Golf Club.
