CHICAGO, Ill. -- Competing in the NCAA Championship Qualifying Meet for the third time in three years, the Navy gymnastics team once again came through when the bright lights of the premier national championship shown. One of six teams in the first qualifying session on Friday afternoon at the UIC Pavilion, the Mids posted a score of 390.921 to finish fifth. The team's effort was spearheaded by four members, who advanced to compete in the NCAA Championship Finals on Saturday.
Lucas Beltran (Corpus Christi, Texas) and
Frank Bradley (McLean, Va.) advanced to the finals on the vault, while
Trevor North (Johnstown, Ohio) moved on for the parallel bars and
David Toussaint (Warren, Ohio) progressed on the pommel horse.
"I could not be prouder of this group of young men who stepped out on the floor today and absolutely laid it all on the line," head coach Kip Simons said. "I could tell it was going to be a special day right from the start when we went out and hit five out of five pommel horse routines. It was a very special day for our three seniors - Andy Jones, Vadim Ivanov and Noah Beeman. They went out as champions today.
"Having four guys advance to the NCAA Finals tomorrow night is very exciting. If they put the routines together, we have the opportunity to bring home some All-Americans."
The Midshipmen finished with 390.921 points behind Stanford (407.390), Minnesota (404.758), Nebraska (402.690), and Michigan (400.590). Air Force was sixth in the session with 385.688 points.
As a team, Navy posted a 66.264 on the floor exercise, a 62.966 on the pommel horse, a 64.831 on the rings, a 69.697 on the vault, a 64.765 on the parallel bars and a 62.398 on the high bar.
On the pommel horse, Toussaint finished second in the qualifying session with a combined score of 13.600, being edged by Minnesota's Vitali Kan who posted a score of 13.733.
Bradley tied for fifth in the vault with Alex Magsam of Nebraska with a score of 14.366. He was joined in the top 10 by Beltran who's score of 14.266 who finished in ninth to advance to Saturday's finals.
On the parallel bars, North registered a collective score of 13.633 to tie for 10th to advance to Saturday's competition.
Ryan McVay (Roseville, Calif.) was the top finisher for the Midshipmen in the floor competition. The freshman just missed advancing to the finals in his first ever NCAA qualifying meet, finishing 14th with a score 13.700.
Joining Toussaint in the top 15 of the pommel was Ryan Orce (Gainesville, Fla.) who finished just outside of the top 10 with a 14th place finish. His score of 12.933 was 0.2 points outside of the top 10 and advancement.
The Navy quartet that advanced to the finals will begin competition at 7:00 p.m. at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago. Live stats and live video will be available throughout the finals.
