Quartet of Navy Gymnasts Conclude Season in NCAA Championship Finals

April 21, 2018

CHICAGO - The Navy men's gymnastics program wrapped up a successful 2018 campaign with four athletes participating in the NCAA Championship Finals on Saturday night at the UIC Pavilion. One night after finishing 11th in the NCAA Championship Qualifying Meet as a team, the Mids were represented in the premier collegiate championship event by David Toussaint (Fr., Warren, Ohio) on the pommel horse, Trevor North (So., Johnstown, Ohio) on the parallel bars, and Frank Bradley (So., McLean, Va.) and Lucas Beltran (So., Corpus Christi, Texas) on the vault.

North highlighted Navy's night on the campus of the University of Illinois Chicago as the sophomore recorded a score of 13.533, that tied for 24th place overall amongst a field of 43 gymnasts. Competing in his first NCAA Championship Final, North tied with Jonathan Wang of California and Tyson Bull from Illinois.

Bradley was the next highest placing Midshipmen as he was awarded a 13.966-point score by the judges for his vault. That point total ranked 31 of 44 gymnasts on the apparatus. Beltran, a second-time NCAA Championship Finals competitor, joined his classmate in the finals for the vault and totaled 13.4 points to tie for 39th place with Penn State's Josh Smith and Springfield's Chris Graff.

The Mids' leader in their pommel horse lineup throughout the season, Toussaint turned in the second-highest score in session one of the qualifying meet on Friday with a 13.6. In Saturday's championship final, the freshman posted a score a 12.8 that was good for 36th in the standings of the 43-gymnast field.

"Our four gymnasts tonight capped off a great weekend for Navy men's gymnastics at the NCAA Championships," remarked head coach Kip Simons. "Having three sophomores and a freshman competing in the NCAA Finals shows signs of a strong future for this program. David, Frank, Lucas and Trevor all fought hard and battled until the end. I'm very proud of the effort that they showed in representing our program."

In terms of the team championship, Oklahoma defended its title with a 414.858 score. Minnesota finished runner-up with a score of 411.923 to edge Illinois' 411.689. Stanford (408.725), Nebraska (403.589) and Penn State (401.991) rounded out the field of six competitors.

In the all-around event, Oklahoma's Yul Moldauer won with a total of 87.298 points as he crushed the field by over four points. Minnesota's Shane Wiskus placed second at 83.064.

Saturday night's competition marked the conclusion of the 2018 season for Navy.
