Navy Defeats Army to Win Patriot League Title

April 29, 2018

Final Stats

SYRACUSE, N.Y. â€" One week and one day after winning his No. 1 singles match to give the Navy men's tennis team a dramatic 4-3 victory over Army West Point in the Star Match, Andrew Ton (Fr., Milpitas, Calif.) won at No. 1 singles to give the Mids a 4-2 win over the Black Knights in the championship match of the Patriot League Tournament. Sunday's match between the tournament's top-seeded Mids (28-10) and the second-seeded Black Knights (17-12) was played at the Drumlins Tennis Center in Syracuse, N.Y.

Navy claimed its 11th Patriot League Tournament title in program history today and will compete in the NCAA Tournament for the seventh time since 1999 when the field was expanded to 64 teams and all conference tournament winners were granted an automatic berth into the event. The Mids last qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2015.

Each of the three doubles matches played today were rematches from the doubles contests that were played eight days ago on The Yard. The Black Knights posted wins at both Nos. 1 and 2 doubles in the first meeting of the season to claim the doubles point. Today, Navy's No. 1 tandem of Ton and Aries Wong (Sr., Bethesda, Md.) avenged a 6-4 loss to Michael Nguyen and Greg Shannon with a 6-1 victory. The Mids then earned the doubles point for the 10th time in 11 matches against league foes this year when their No. 2 pairing of Greg Durham (So., Melbourne Beach, Fla.) and Gabriel Pilones (So., Bradenton, Fla.) defeated Myles Conlin and Dylan Simonsen by the score of 6-2. The Conlin / Simonsen team posted a 6-3 win over Durham / Pilones in last weekend's match.

The remaining doubles match today was stopped with the Navy duo of Peter Lohrbach (Fr., Little Neck, N.Y.) and Andrey Majkic (Sr., Jacksonville, Fla.) leading David Mitchell and Grant Patterson by the score of 5-4 at the No. 3 flight.

"Great doubles point for us," said Navy head coach Chris Garner.

Just as in the three doubles matches, each of the six singles matches today featured rematches from the last time these teams took to the courts.

Army tied the match at 1-1 when Conlin won a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Durham at No. 3 singles. Conlin won a 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 match over Durham last week.

"Incredible drama in all of the matches after Army tied the score at 1-1," said Garner. "The will and competitiveness of both teams were on full display as they were bringing out the best in one another."

The Black Knights took a 2-1 lead thanks to Michael Sienko defeating Pilones, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, at the No. 5 flight. Sienko defeated Pilones, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, in Annapolis.

"Gabriel had chances," said Garner, "but Sienko, who is an incredible competitor, gave Army its second point."

Navy tied the proceedings at 2-2 on a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 victory by Wong over Shannon at No. 2 singles. Wong defeated Shannon, 6-4, 6-4, in the Star Match.

"Aries would claw his way to win a tough three-set battle and tie the score back up," said Garner.

The Mids moved to within one point of the title when Lohrbach defeated Anant Mundra, 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 (7-2), at No. 6 singles. Lohrbach posted a 6-3, 7-5 win over Mundra a week ago.

"Peter had four matches points at 6-5 in the third, but would up going into a tiebreaker," said Garner. "He would recover to play a great breaker and get us to three points."

The Star Match was tied at 3-3 with just Ton and Nguyen battling it out at No. 1 singles. Last week's contest saw Nguyen win the first set, 6-3, and Ton win the second, 6-4. Nguyen then jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the third set only to see Ton rally to take a 6-5 lead. Ton served the ensuing game, but fell behind, 15-40. Ton won the next three points to win the game, set and match and give the Mids the 4-3 win.

Today, Nguyen defeated Ton in a first set tiebreaker, 7-2, then Ton won the second set, 6-3. Ton would go on to win the third and final set by the score of 6-2 to clinch the match for the Mids.

The lone match left on the courts had Walker Sims (Sr., Memphis, Tenn.) leading Mitchell, 6-3, 2-6, 6-5, at No. 4 singles. Sims won a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Mitchell on The Yard.

"Walker had a knockdown, drag out match with Mitchell, who was playing very well," said Garner. "Walker was serving for the match when Andrew came back from being a set down to clinch the match for us."

Ton was tabbed as the MVP of the Patriot League Tournament.

The NCAA Tournament bracket will be announced Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. via NCAA.com. The first two rounds will be contested either May 11-12 or May 12-13, depending upon whether or not the host site is also playing host to the first two rounds of the women's tournament. The women's tournament matches will be played on the first two days at a site tthat plays host to both this year.
