ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy varsity offshore sailing team had six crews compete in the NASS Race to Oxford and the return race -- Hammond Memorial Race -- on Saturday and Sunday.
During the 64th NASS Race to Oxford -- a 30-mile point-to-point race from Annapolis to Oxford, Md. -- senior captain
Viktor Turner (Sr., Lincoln, Neb.) led his crew on Tenacious to a third-place finish in the PHRF A2 class, where 24 boats competed.
Joshua Corbett (Sr., Mendham, N.J.) was the skipper on the Defiance and was just behind Tenacious in the PHRF A2 class. Rounding out the Navy boats in the PHRF A2 class, was Integrity -- captained by
George Davis (Sr., Hartford, Conn.) -- in 10th place.
The Midshipmen also had three boats competing in the J/105 class.
Hayden Kuzemchak (Jr., Ligonier, Pa.) skippered Avenger to second place out of eight boats in the class. Allegiance and Dreadnought capped off the Navy crews in the class with seventh- and eighth-place finishes.
On Sunday in the Hammond Memorial Race return to Annapolis, the Mids faced tough conditions with high winds, limited visibility, fog and drenching rain. Turner again led Navy's charge in the race as he captained Tenacious to the victory.
Corbett led Defiance to a runner-up finish in the return race, while Davis and Integrity had to retire for the event following a navigational error.
In the J/105 class, Kuzemchak and Avenger jumped out to an early lead and never looked back en route to winning the class.
George Hamilton (Jr., St. Louis, Mo.) captained Allegiance to a second-place finish and
Ethan Falsone's (Jr., Edgewater, Md.) Dreadnought was forced to withdraw due to technical difficulties.
Navy also sent a crew to Long Beach Island, N.Y., for the Spirit Rider 9/11 Memorial Regatta, where it lone crew in competition won the event outlasting a team from West Point.
The Midshipmen return to action this weekend at the Shields Trophy Regatta and the Hospice Cup, both in Annapolis.
