Setting the Stage
•    Navy and SMU will meet for the 20th time in school history and for the fourth time as American Athletic Conference divisional rivals when they square off on Saturday afternoon at Ford Stadium (32,000) in Dallas. Kickoff is set for 12:00 pm (ET), 11:00 am in Dallas.
• Navy leads the all-time series against SMU, 12-7, as the Mids have won eight straight contests against the Mustangs. Navy's Ken Niumatalolo has been the head coach for seven of those games. The Mids own a 6-3 record against SMU in games played in Dallas. The Mustangs' last win over Navy came back in 1998, in a 24-11 victory in Annapolis. SMU's last win over Navy at home was in 1966 (21-3). Last year, Navy won a thriller in Annapolis, 43-40, on an 18-yard field goal by J.R. Osborn at the gun.

Perry's 3 Touchdowns Propel Navy Past Lehigh, 51-21
•    Quarterback Malcolm Perry ran for 223 yards with three touchdowns and Navy renewed its rivalry with Lehigh by rolling to a 51-21 victory last Saturday.
•     Perry spent the afternoon dodging and spinning around defenders in the Midshipmen's triple-option offense that amassed 629 total yards. The junior set the tone with touchdown runs from 5 and 24 yards in the opening quarter. He had another deft 30-yard scoring run in the third quarter.
•     Perry also threw a 49-yard pass to slot back CJ Williams that set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Zach Abey, who has six touchdowns. Williams had three receptions for a career-best 104 yards.
•     Sophomore Myles Fells had a 52-yard score on his first career carry that provided a 28-7 lead with 10:39 left in the half.
•     The Mountain Hawks played without tailback Dominick Bragalone, who is the school's all-time leading rusher with 3,722 career yards. He suffered a head injury the week prior against Villanova.
•     Freshman tailback Rashawn Allen replaced Bragalone and ran for 147 yards on 16 carries, including a 75-yard touchdown run on Lehigh's first play from scrimmage and another 26-yard score in the fourth quarter.
•     Mountain Hawks quarterback Brad Mayes was 19-of-31 for 158 yards with three interceptions.
•     Navy starting safety and defensive captain Sean Williams was out with a head injury suffered against Memphis. Sophomore Jacob Springer started in his place and had a first-quarter interception that set up a touchdown.
•     Lehigh, a member of the Football Championship Subdivision, and Navy first met in 1889. The teams had not played since 1987. The Midshipmen lead the all-time series 15-6-1.

Scouting SMU
•    The Mustangs are off to an 0-3 start, but have played one of the more challenging nonconference schedules in the country. SMU has lost to No. 15 TCU (42-12), at No. 19 Michigan, 45-20, and to a North Texas squad that blew out Arkansas last Saturday (46-23).
•    Quarterback Ben Hicks is 37-of-78 for 476 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions, while backup William Brown has completed 11-of-17 passes for 82 yards and two touchdowns.
•    James Proche is SMU's leading receiver with 19 catches for 293 yards and three touchdowns, while running back Braeden West has 8 catches for 106 yards and a touchdown.
•    West is SMU's leading rusher with 129 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries.
•    Rodney Clemons leads the SMU defense with 23 tackles and 1.5 tackles for a loss, while Patrick Nelson has 19 tackles and 4.5 tackles for a loss.

Hailing From The Lone Star State
•    Navy has 18 players from the state of Texas, second most on the roster next to Tennessee (20).
•    Starters for Navy on the current depth chart include senior left guard Laurent Njiki (Wylie), senior wide receiver Taylor Jackson (Texarkana), senior slot back Tre Walker (Texarkana) and senior defensive end Josh Webb (Plano).
•    Other Texas players on the depth chart include sophomore third-team left guard Billy Honaker (Schertz), senior second-team center Bryan Barrett (Denton), freshman second-team wide receiver Mychal Cooper (San Antonio), junior second-team slot back Tazh Maloy (Pflugerville), sophomore second-team slot back and starting kick returner CJ Williams (Cibolo) and senior second-team defensive end Anthony Villalobs (Fort Worth).

Navy and SMU Battle For The Gansz Trophy
•    The SMU and Navy Athletic Departments created the Gansz Trophy in 2009, a travelling trophy to honor the late coaching legend Frank Gansz. Navy is 6-0 in Gansz Trophy games since the trophy was created.
• Considered perhaps the top special teams coach in the history of the NFL, Frank Gansz spent time at both SMU and the Naval Academy. Gansz was starting his second season as special teams coach on the Hilltop when he passed away on April 27, 2009. As a collegian, Gansz played center and linebacker for the Naval Academy from 1957 to 1959 and graduated in 1960. He also spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Navy.
• In all, Gansz was a veteran of 38 seasons of coaching - 24 in the NFL and 14 in the collegiate ranks.
• Prior to coming to SMU in 2008, Gansz was with the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he was special teams coordinator in 2000 and 2001. Prior to his time with the Jags, he served as the special teams coach of the St. Louis Rams for three seasons, helping the team to its victory in Super Bowl XXXIV.
• In 1986, Gansz's first year as the assistant head coach/special teams for Kansas City, the Chiefs blocked or deflected an NFL-record 10 kicks and scored five touchdowns. Because of his success with the special teams, Gansz was promoted to head coach of the Chiefs, a role he served from 1987 to 1988.
• He left the Chiefs to become the special teams coach of the Detroit Lions from 1989 to 1993, a period in which Mel Gray developed into the NFL's all-time leader in combined kick return yardage. In 1989, Gansz was named NFL Special Teams Coach of the Year by his peers. Gansz then spent three years as the assistant head coach/special teams for the Atlanta Falcons from 1994 to 1996.
• Gansz's NFL career began in 1978 as special teams coach for the San Francisco 49ers. He coached special teams and tight ends for Cincinnati (1979-80), Kansas City (1981-82) and Philadelphia (1983-85).
• After serving as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force for nearly seven years, Gansz began his coaching career at the Air Force Academy (1964-66). He also had coaching stints at Colgate (1968), Navy (1969-72), Oklahoma State (1973, 1975), Army (1974) and UCLA (1976-77).

A Lot of Points
•    Navy's 51 points against Lehigh last Saturday were the most points scored by a Navy team since 2016 when it scored 75 against SMU in a 75-31 win.

Mids Pile Up the Yards Against Lehigh
•    Navy's 629 yards of total offense against Lehigh stands as the 10th most in school history and the most since amassing 680 yards in the Mids' unforgettable 74-62 win over North Texas in 2007.
•    Navy's 484 yards rushing against the Mountain Hawks rank 15th in school history.

100-100
•    Junior quarterback Malcolm Perry rushed for 223 yards, while sophomore slot back CJ Williams had 104 yards receiving in Navy's 51-21 victory over Lehigh.
•    It marked the first time Navy had over 100 yards from a rusher and receiver since Nov. 20, 2010, when Ricky Dobbs (154 rushing) and Greg Jones (129 receiving) did it against Arkansas State in a 35-19 win.
