STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The Navy women's golf team finished tied for fifth at the Nittany Lion Invitational on the Penn State Blue Course where the Midshipmen set records for lowest team round, lowest 54-hole team score and lowest 54-hole individual score by
Morgan Frazier (Jr., Mechanicsburg, Pa.).
Navy compiled a three-round total of 30-over par 894 and the Midshipmen finished the tournament a team score of 5-over par 293 in the third round. Navy's third round total of 293 set a new program best for lowest team round, surpassing a 296 in the second round of the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic in the spring of 2018. The three-round score of 894 also set a new three-round program record besting a 900 from last season's Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic.
"This was a very tough tournament playing 36 holes on Saturday and then 18 holes today in a strong field," head coach
Nadia Ste-Marie said after the event. "The girl's managed their games well throughout the tournament and each of them stuck with their game plan throughout the weekend.
"We had great scores with a record-setting 293 on the final day where each girl shot in the 70s. This was the longest course we have ever played and posted our best score. I am excited with our result from this weekend and I am excited for the rest of the season."
Frazier – who was playing in her home state – led Navy with a two-day total of 2-over par 218 to finish tied for seventh in the 90-golfer field. The junior captain fired an even-par 72 in the first round and then followed with back-to-back 1-over par 73s to finish off the tournament. Frazier's score of 218 also set a new program record for lowest 54-hole tournament score for an individual.
Christine McDonnell (So., Suwanee, Ga.) finished in the top 15 after compiling a 5-over par 221. She moved up 30 spots on the individual leaderboard with final round score of 2-under par 70. McDonnell was the lone Mid to post a round under par during the event. In the first round, the sophomore carded a 1-over par 73 and she then notched a 6-over par 78 in the second round.
Katie Um (So., Chesapeake, Va.) started her 2018-19 season tied for 29th in the field with a 9-over par 225. She played consistently throughout the weekend carding an opening round 3-over par 75 and then a 4-over par 76 to finish day one. On Sunday, she finished with a 2-over par 74, which tied her lowest collegiate round.
Playing in her first collegiate tournament,
Tori Smith (Fr., Arlington, Tenn.) finished tied for 45th. She racked up a three-round total of 14-over par 230. Following an 8-over par 80 in the first round, Smith rebounded with a 2-over par 74 and then finished with a 4-over par 76 in the third round.
Elizabeth Park (So., San Diego, Calif.) capped off Navy's lineup compiling a 26-over par 242. During the first day of the event, she posted an 82 followed by an 84. Park battled back on the final day of the invitational with a 4-over par 76.
Penn State won its home tournament after besting No. 16 Washington in a tiebreaker after the two finished with a pair of even-par 864s. Penn State's Sarah Willis – who was competing as an individual – ran away with medalist honors after a tournament score of 11-under par 205, which was a program record for the Nittany Lions.
Navy is back in action this coming weekend at the Princeton Invitational at Springdale Golf Club in Princeton, N.J.
