ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– The Navy men's tennis team will open its spring season with a busy four-match slate this weekend. The Mids will play host to St. Bonaventure Saturday at 5 p.m. and Drexel Sunday at noon at the Tose Family Tennis Center. Navy also will compete Saturday at Penn (9 a.m.) and Sunday at Duquesne (1 p.m.).
"With a productive fall season behind us," said Navy head coach
Chris Garner, "I know the team is looking forward to the spring season. It will be a very busy and competitive first weekend for the players as we face four talented teams. All of the teams will be a challenge during the doubles point as well as in the six singles matches. It will be a great opportunity for the team to be tested on both the mental and physical side of the game."
Navy returns half of its singles and doubles lineups that competed in both the 2018 Patriot League Tournament and the ensuing NCAA Tournament. The Mids compiled a 28-11 record last year, an overall record that included a 10-1 effort against Patriot League teams.
Returning singles starters for the Mids are
Andrew Ton (So., Milpitas, Calif.),
Greg Durham (Jr., Melbourne Beach, Fla.) and
Peter Lohrbach (So., Little Neck, N.Y.). Ton posted an 18-8 record in dual matches while playing primarily at No. 1 singles last season, Durham ended the spring season with a 9-6 record and played No. 3 for the Mids in the league tournament and Lohrbach tallied a 15-10 record overall in the spring, which included a 7-2 record against league foes, and competed at No. 6 singles in the league tournament.
The above trio also accounted for three spots in the team's doubles lineup, with Ton playing at the No. 1 flight, Durham at No. 2 doubles and Lohrbach being half of Navy's No. 3 tandem.
Pacing Navy during the 2018 fall slate of individual tournaments were
Derrick Thompson (Fr., Towson, Md.) with a 10-3 record in singles,
Jack Dabek (Fr., Dublin, Ohio) with a 9-6 record and
Jonathan Dollahite (Fr., Orem, Utah) with an 8-3 record.
