Men's Tennis Posts Pair of Wins Sunday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– A productive opening weekend of the season for the Navy (3-1) men's tennis team came to a close Sunday with the Mids posting a 5-2 victory over Drexel (0-3) in Annapolis and winning a 4-3 decision at Duquesne (0-1).

Navy vs. Drexel
The doubles point between the teams came down to the last match to finish on the Tose Family Tennis Center courts.  The Mids won the first match to be completed as Jake Fishkin (Fr., Baltimore, Md.) and Jack McBride (Fr., Chapel Hill, N.C.) recorded a 6-4 win over Djordje Janackovic and Sinan Orhon at No. 1 doubles. The Dragons evened the proceedings at one win each when Alvaro Chamorro and Juan Sanchez combined for a 6-4 win over team captain Andrew Hicks (Sr., Haddon Heights, N.J.) and Sam Vagner (Fr., Staten Island, N.Y.) at the No. 3 flight.

Navy's No. 2 tandem of Jonathan Dollahite (Fr., Orem, Utah) and Conners O'Brien (Fr., Rensselaer, N.Y.) secured the opening point of the match for the Mids with their 7-5 victory over Xandy Hammitt and Sanil Jagtiani.

"Conners and Jonathan played their best tennis of the set when the doubles point was on the line," said Navy head coach Chris Garner.

Drexel would jump in front by the score of 2-1 with victories at the Nos. 1 and 6 singles flights, but Navy won the remaining four matches left on the courts to clinch the victory.  Fishkin at No. 3, McBride at No. 4 and Dollahite at No. 5 each won straight set decisions, and Matthew Lee (Jr., San Diego, Calif.) recorded a 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 1-0 (10-8) victory at No. 2 singles in the last match to be completed.

"Jake, Jack and Jonathan all played well in earning decisive straight set victories to secure the four team points and clinch the match," said Garner.  "Matthew also won a very competitive three setter at No. 2 singles."

Navy vs. Duquesne
The first doubles match to finish between the Mids and the Dukes saw Jack Dabek (Fr., Dublin, Ohio) and Derrick Thompson (Fr., Towson, Md.) give Navy an early advantage with their 6-2 win at the No. 2 flight over Chris Corrao and Alejandro Rodriguez.  The Nos. 1 and 3 matches wrapped up at the same time, and though Duquesne won the No. 3 match by the score of 6-4, Navy's No. 1 team of Greg Durham (Jr., Melbourne Beach, Fla.) and Andrew Ton (So., Milpitas, Calif.) won a 6-3 decision over Dane Bendel and Alex Mascioli to secure the opening point of the match.

"The doubles matches were a real battle," said Navy associate head coach John Moreland.  "We were able to come away with the point, which was a big lift for us."

The Navy lead became 2-0 when Dabek defeated Rodriguez, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 4 singles, then Thompson won a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 match over Jared Isaacs at No. 3 singles to make the score 3-0.  Romesh Kahatapitiya (So., Virginia Beach, Va.) secured the match for the Mids with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) win over Bendel at No. 6 singles.

"Jack and Derrick played well to stake us to the 3-0 lead, then Romesh came back after trailing 6-5 in the second set to force the tiebreaker and get us to four team points," said Moreland."

Duquesne would win the final three matches, with two of them being extended into three sets and the remaining match decided in a pair of tiebreakers.

"I was pleased with the team effort," said Moreland.  "It was good to receive contributions from all parts of our lineup."

Navy will be back home in the Tose Family Tennis Center for matches Saturday against East Carolina and Mount St. Mary's.
