ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Riding high after a dramatic 1-0 victory on Friday over their archrivals, the Army Black Knights, the Navy women's soccer team will look to carry that momentum over to its midweek Patriot League matchup on Wednesday night versus Lafayette. Winners of nine straight games, including league victories over Colgate and Army, the Mids (10-1, 2-0 PL) host a Leopard (5-4-1, 1-1 PL) team that knocked off Lehigh this past Saturday by a score of 2-0. Kickoff between the two squads is set for 7 p.m. at Navy's Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. All of the action will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network.

Last Time Out
In the annual Women's Soccer Star Match between Army and Navy on Friday night, the Midshipmen earned a hard-fought 1-0 road victory over the Black Knights. Knotted in a stalemate through 73 minutes of action, Carolyn Mang found the back of the net as she flicked in a Baseley McClaskey free kick from inside the 18-yard box. 

Defense controlled much of the action in the first half as the game went into the intermission deadlocked at 0-0. Over those first 45 minutes, the total shots and shots on goal categories were knotted as both Army and Navy recorded four shots with two on goal.
 
The defensive corps of both Army and Navy played an even larger role in the final 45 minutes of regulation as the teams combined to record just five total shots in the second half. The Black Knights' best scoring opportunity came less than seven minutes into the period when Alyssa Carfagno found a bit of space and ripped an errant shot towards goal that hit the side-netting much to the chagrin of the boisterous home crowd. In the 59th minute, Shafer took the Black Knights' final shot of the game, a high shot that clanked off the crossbar.
 
Withstanding that initial attack. Navy tried to re-establish its brand of soccer. Controlling the pace and possession on the strength of its midfield and defense, the Mids starting tipping the offensive tide in their favor over the final 20 minutes of action. Mang was critical in the team's success during this span of play as she put a lengthy low shot on frame to test a diving Cassalia at 71:18. Less than three minutes after that shot, the sophomore midfielder was on the receiving end of a McClaskey free kick that started 25 yards from net. After McClaskey drove her free kick low past the Army wall, Mang re-directed that pass with a quick flick to the far side of the goal past the outstretched arms of the Black Knights' goalkeeper.

For the game, Navy outshot Army, 7-6 with a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Mids also held a slight advantage in corner kicks by a 4-2 margin.

Navy vs. Lafayette
Wednesday will be the 29th meeting (23-4-1) between the two schools in a series that began in Navy's first year of varsity existence in 1993 ... In that Sept. 26, 1993 matchup, Lafayette took the contest by a 7-1 decision ... Over the next 17 meetings between the Mids and Leopards, Navy went 17-0, including a postseason victory in 2001 ... After tying in 2010 and losing in the regular season in 2011, Navy then rattled off four straight wins (2011-PL Semis, 2012, 2013 and 2014) before Lafayette posted consecutive 1-0 shutout victories in 2015 and 2016 ... All-time, Navy has outscored Lafayette, 67-20 and hold an 11-1-1 mark in games played in Annapolis.

2018 Matchup
The Midshipmen came out on Oct. 17 and gained three important points in the Patriot League standings with a 1-0 win on the road at Lafayette. Scoreless through the opening 45 minutes, the Mids (10-4-3, 6-1 PL) received a game-winning goal from Cadie Higginson in the 48th minute to defeat the Leopards (4-11, 1-6 PL) at Oaks Stadium.

Defense was tight throughout the contest as a glance at the halftime box score showed Navy with just two shots, while Lafayette was unable to register even one shot.

Coming out of the locker room after intermission, the Mids quickly broke the stalemate 3:17 into the second half when Baseley McClaskey navigated the left wing and darted into the box before slotting a square pass to a waiting Higginson, who one-timed a shot into the back of the net.

In the Navy 1-0 victory, the Mids outshot the Leopards, 6-1, with a 2-1 advantage in shots on goal. Navy recorded three corner kicks versus two for Lafayette.

Fans are reminded that the general public does not have access to drive their vehicles on to the U.S. Naval Academy. Fans may park at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium for $5 and take a shuttle that will run every 10 minutes starting one hour prior to the game (6:00 PM) and will continue running until one hour after the game is completed (approx. 10:00 PM). Fans 18 and over need a government-issued photo ID. Enter Gate 5 off Taylor Ave. to park at the stadium. Dogs are not permitted inside the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
