DURHAM, N.C. – Former Navy baseball pitcher
Noah Song has been selected to USA Baseball's 28-man Premier12 roster, the national organization announced on Thursday. The World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Premier12 event is the first opportunity for Team USA to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
Song finished his career at Navy this past spring and was the first player in program history to be selected as a First Team All-American. Song finished his career as the program leader in wins (32), strikeouts (428) and innings pitched (334-1/3), while his nine career shutouts are tied for most in school history. Song also set the single-season record for strikeouts with 161 last spring and he also led the nation with 15.41 strikeouts per nine innings.
As a senior, Song was selected as a finalist for the prestigious Golden Spikes Award – where he was the lone pitcher of the four finalists. Following his senior season, Song was drafted in the fourth round (137th overall) of the 2019 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Boston Red Sox.
This summer, Song pitched for the Lowell Spinners in Class A Short Season in the Red Sox organization. With the Spinners, he made seven starts and pitched in 17 innings during his first summer of professional baseball. In his seven starts, he allowed just 10 hits and two runs, while striking out 19 batters. Song notched a 1.06 ERA and allowed opponents to hit just .167 at the plate during the regular season. He also made a pair of postseason appearances as Lowell finished as the runner-up in the New York-Penn League. In the postseason, Song allowed two runs in six innings and struck out nine batters.
Team USA's 28-man roster for the Premier12 features 15 pitchers and 13 position players that are currently not on an MLB 40-man roster. Of the 28 players, six are former national team alumni and seven are listed in the MLB Pipeline Top-100 Prospects. Song – who is not among the top 100 – is currently the 15th-ranked prospect in the Boston Red Sox organization and fifth-ranked pitching prospect for the Red Sox. The Boston Red Sox have the most prospects on the roster with four players.
Four-time World Series Champion Joe Girardi was named the manager for Team USA in August. The rest of the coaching staff includes bench coach Scott Brosius, bullpen coach Roly de Armas, hitting coach Phil Plantier, pitching coach Bryan Price, third base coach Willie Randolph and first base coach Ernie Young.
The Premier12 takes place from November 2-4 in Guadalajara, Mexico. Team USA is in group A and will be joined by the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Netherlands. The top two teams from group A will advance to the Super Round in Tokyo from November 11-16. The top finisher from both the Americas territory and Asia/Oceania territory (excluding Japan) will join host-country Japan and WBSC Baseball Europe/Africa Olympic Qualifier champion Israel in the six-team Olympic tournament. The final two Olympic berths will be decided in March 2020.
Team USA will train in Surprise, Ariz., from October 21-28 at the Kansas City Royals Spring Training facility before competing in the Premier12.
