Strong Air Rifle Score Leads No. 7 Navy Past No. 13 Memphis

Navy's 2,362 in air rifle tied the program record in the event

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The seventh-ranked Navy rifle team (2-1, 1-0 GARC) posted a 2,362 in air rifle to rally from behind and upend No. 13 Memphis (1-1, 0-1 GARC), 4,664-4,662, on Saturday at the Bancroft Hall Rifle Range.

The 2,362 from the Midshipmen matched the program record in the event, which was set last season in a tri-match against North Carolina State and Akron. All of last year, Navy broke the 2,360 mark just four times.

"I am really proud of our team today," head coach Mike Anti said after the match. "In smallbore, we struggled a bit, especially right at the end of the event. Going into air rifle, we were down by seven points to a tough Memphis team. Instead of feeling defeated, our team started and finished strong in air rifle posting one of our highest team scores and winning the final competition by two points. It was great to see our team fight back for the win."

In smallbore, Navy recorded a 2,302 and it failed to record a 580 in the event with Michael Zanti (So., Norfolk, Va.) leading Navy with a 579. Gabriella Mayes (So., Rio Rancho, N.M.) and Mark Amdahl (So., Albuquerque, N.M.) posted matching 575s for the Midshipmen and the final counting score for Navy came from Torrance Kang (Jr., Columbia, Md.) with a 573.

After trailing by seven points heading into air rifle, the Midshipmen counted three scores of at least 590 and they had four of the top five scores in the event. Kang led Navy with a 594, which was second among all shooters in the field. Kang's 594 tied her career-high, which she has now hit in each of her first three seasons. Amdahl and Mayes continued to mirror each other's scores on the day as they each shot a 590 on Saturday. Zanti fired the final counting score in air rifle with a 588 as Navy completed the comeback and edged the Tigers by two points.

The Midshipmen finished with 4,664 total points for the second-straight event after hitting that mark during the first week of the season against TCU and VMI.

Kang and Zanti led Navy on Saturday with aggregate scores of 1,167 points, while Amdahl and Mayes tallied a pair of 1,165s. The Tigers had the top-three aggregate scores in the field with Levi Clark guiding Memphis with a total of 1,173 points, which was highlighted by a field-best 595 in air rifle. Navy has now won its last three meetings against the Tigers with each of the three coming under head coach Mike Anti.

The Midshipmen hit the road next weekend as they have a pair of matches in Ohio. Navy first takes on conference foe No. 12 Akron on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. and then faces No. 15 Ohio State at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
