COLUMBUS, Ohio – Following a loss on Saturday to start the weekend, the seventh-ranked Navy rifle team (3-2) bounced back on Sunday with a 4,671-4,647 victory over No. 10 Ohio State in a top-10 matchup in Columbus, Ohio.
The Midshipmen's total score of 4,671 points set a new season-high, which was anchored by a season-high 2,315 in smallbore.
Mark Amdahl (So., Albuquerque, N.M.) had a career day as he led Navy and set three career-highs in the process. He set a personal best in smallbore (581) and air rifle (594), while also breaking the 1,170 mark for the first time in his career after compiling an aggregate score of 1,175.
"We had a decent weekend," head coach
Mike Anti said following the road trip. "We struggled a bit on Saturday but had a great bounce back on Sunday against Ohio State. We had solid performances in both events, which is needed to put a good overall team score together. We had a few notable individual performances.
Mark Amdahl fired a personal best in both events and led the team to victory.
Kestrel Kuhne also fired her best match of the season, just a couple of points behind Mark. Overall, a successful weekend."
Amdahl and
Kestrel Kuhne (Sr., Everett, Pa.) each fired a 581 in smallbore with
Gabriella Mayes (So., Rio Rancho, N.M.) just missing the 580 threshold with a 579 in the discipline. The final counting score for Navy came from
Torrance Kang (Jr., Columbia, Md.) with a 574 and the Midshipmen held an eight-point lead heading into air rifle.
Navy continued to pull away from Buckeyes in air rifle after the Midshipmen outscored Ohio State by 16 points to seal the victory. After finishing tied for second in the field in smallbore, Amdahl fired a field-best 594 in the event.
Kestrel Kuhne was the only other shooter in the field to score at least 590 points in air rifle and she fired a 592 to finish with a total score of 1,173, which was second in the field behind only Amdahl.
Michael Zanti (So., Norfolk, Va.) posted a 588 for the Midshipmen and the final counting air rifle score for Navy came from Mayes with a 582. As a non-starter in air rifle,
Laurel Kuhne (So., Everett, Pa.) finished seventh in the field with a 586 in the event to tie her career-high.
Ariel Hall led all shooters in smallbore with a score of 583 and she finished third in aggregate scoring with a 1,172, following her 589 in air rifle. Hall led the Buckeyes in each of the three scoring categories.
The Midshipmen are back on the road next weekend for matches against North Carolina State at The Citadel in Charleston, S.C.
