ITHACA, N.Y. – The Navy sprint football team (6-0) notched a 70-7 road win over Cornell (1-5) on Friday night at Schoellkopf Field in Ithaca, N.Y. In the game, six different Midshipmen scored touchdowns, including four players who finished the game with two TDs apiece.
"The hard work the team put in this week showed in the execution in all aspects of the game,"
Major Jason Dewald, USMC said after the game. "Cornell played the entire game and never quit. We are looking forward to another productive week of practice and will look to finish the regular season out strong."
Navy finished the game with 438 total yards compared to 165 by Cornell. The Midshipmen rushed for 326 yards and 10 touchdowns, while the Big Red had just 75 yards on the ground. The Mids outgained Cornell, 112-90, in the air.
Caleb Champion (Milton, Fla.),
Braydan Chmiel (Warrenton, Mo.), Josh Hudson (Wilmington, Del.), and
Terry Totta (Kansas City, Kan.) each tallied two touchdowns apiece, while
Jake Foss (Merced, Calif.) and
Matthew McGee (Port Charlotte, Fla.) added one score each.
Defensively, the Midshipmen were balanced.
David Postma (Bellevue, Wash.) and
Chris Sims (Las Vegas, Nev.) led the way with five tackles apiece. Sims and
Adam Jennings (Scituate, Mass.) paced the team with four solo stops each. Six different players recorded an interception in the game with
Brennen Means (Highland, Calif.) and
Paul Kuehler (Roanoke, Va.) notching INT returns of 43 and 24 yards, respectively.
Jared Swenson (Seymour, Wis.) scored 10 points in the game, going a perfect 10-for-10 in PAT attempts.
Navy jumped out to an early 21-0 lead in the first quarter. Champion capped an eight-play drive with a one-yard plunge into the end zone for the first score of the game. Chmiel used a 44-yard jaunt into the end zone to push the advantage to two scores. Champion closed out the first quarter with a two-yard run for his second score of the game.
In the second quarter, Chmiel ran for a seven-yard score before fellow QB Foss dove one-yard to cross the scoring plane and put Navy in front 35-0 at the half.
In the third quarter, the Midshipmen added four TDs to extend the lead to 63-0. McGee scored from four yards out, while Totta trotted 31 yards for his touchdown. Hudson scored on runs of nine and one yard. Totta added a 33-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to put Navy up 70-0.
Cornell used a two-yard run to find the end zone and prevent a shutout with just over five minutes to play. Navy was able to hold Cornell scoreless the final five minutes to come away with the 70-7 victory.
Navy closes out the regular season on Friday, Nov. 1 as the Midshipmen welcome CSFL newcomer Alderson Broaddus to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium for Senior Day. Opening kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. Live stats will be available.
