10/4/2019 5:51:00 PM

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's soccer team will play its third game in eight days on Saturday night when the Mids host the Lehigh Mountain Hawks in a Patriot League showdown. Coming into the contest with a 2-0-1 mark in league play and an overall record of 10-1-1, Navy will be looking to get back it winning ways after earning a draw against Lafayette on Wednesday night by a score of 1-1. Over their last 10 games, the Mids are 9-0-1. The Mountain Hawks will be riding the wave of momentum after knocking off the previously-unbeaten Bucknell Bison on Wednesday, 3-1. The win improved Lehigh to 3-4-4 and 1-2-0 in Patriot League play. The action on Saturday night is set for an 8 p.m. kick at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.

Last Time Out
Navy continued its run of unbeaten play as the Mids came away from their Wednesday night matchup versus Lafayette with a 1-1 draw. Scoreless through 78 minutes, the last 12 minutes of regulation was action-packed with both teams netting goals, Lafayette in the 79th and Navy in the 87th. Sydney Fortson played a leading role in the holding the 1-1 decision for the Mids (10-1-1, 2-0-1 PL) as she made two saves in the second overtime period off of dangerous Leopard (5-4-2, 1-1-1 PL) shots on goal.

The dynamic of the scoreless game changed in the 79th minute when the Leopards' Riley Dowd received a throw-in, dribbled around and bodied her defender off the ball before taking a low shot to the far corner of the goal to go up 1-0.

With less than 12 minutes left in regulation to find their game-tying goal, the Mids focused solely on their attack. Lafayette stood strong for first eight minutes of this span and allowed just one shot. Navy found its first and only score of the game in one of the rarely seen own-goal fashions as Emily Keast sent a long cross towards goal that was likely running wide and long before a Lafayette defender stepped in front, whiffed on the clearance and saw the ball ricochet off her leg past her goalie at 86:57.

For the game, Navy outshot Lafayette, 18-9 with a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Leopards had six corner kicks versus five for the Mids.

2018 Recap
Navy improved to 4-0 in the Patriot League on the strength of a career-best outing by senior captain Karli Sottung on Sept. 29 at Lehigh. Ranging up into the attack as a forward on numerous occasions, Sottung netted both of the Mids' goals as they defeated the Mountain Hawks by the score of 2-0 at the Ulrich Sports Complex.

The game saw both teams have a nearly equal share of scoring opportunities in the first half. Over the opening 45 minutes of play, Navy recorded six shots versus five for Lehigh. While four of the Mountain Hawks' shots were on goal, the Mids' goalkeeper Sydney Fortson was up to the task with saves on all four attempts. After Navy's initial shot on goal was saved, Sottung made her squad's second shot count in the 27th minute as she put a well-placed shot into the upper-90 from a tough angle to break the stalemate.

The Mids finally gained a buffer with the Mountain Hawks as tight defending by Sottung near midfield in the 81st minute resulted in a turnover and breakaway. Taking it in unabated for the final 30 yards, Sottung drew a dive from Lehigh's goalie, Sam Miller, where she dribbled around the outstretched arms of Miller and put the ball into the gaping net.

In the 2-0 victory, Navy was outshot by Lehigh, 16-11. The Mountain Hawks also led the Mids in shots on goal, 9-4 and in corner kicks, 4-3. Fortson made a season-high nine saves, while recording the clean sheet.
