Water Polo Finishes Troyer Tournament Undefeated

Navy went 4-0 at the Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament.

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Navy water polo team (11-5) swept day two of the Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament in Claremont, Calif. to go undefeated, 4-0, over the two-day invitational. After posting victories over Air Force (W, 13-12) and Chapman (W, 19-11) on the first day, the Midshipmen completed the four-game sweep with wins over Redlands (W, 13-11) and Concordia (W, 13-11).

"This is a great tournament and to be able to come away with four wins is awesome," head coach Luis Nicolao said. "Our team battled hard and was able to come away with some solid wins. We have one more game against Loyola Marymount, who is a top 10 opponent. We are heading into that game with a bunch of confidence and I'm looking forward to another solid performance by the team."

Offensively, Navy tallied 26 goals in the two games. Isaac Salinas (Spring City, Pa.) paced the team with eight goals on the day, notching a pair of hat tricks. Will Clark (Laguna Beach, Calif.) added a hat trick against Redlands, while Bobby Lee (Santa Ana, Calif.) notched a hat trick against Concordia. Lee also added a pair of goals against the Bulldogs to give him five goals on the day.

Defensively, Ronan Williams (Severna Park, Md.) worked the entire game against Redlands. The senior captain recorded 11 saves in the game, while surrendering 11 goals in the victory. In addition, he added a steal against the Bulldogs. Navy used three goalies against Concordia. Max Sandberg (Newport Beach, Calif.) earned the victory over Eagles. The sophomore surrendered three goals, while making seven stops between the pipes. Williams and Brandon Shields (Lake Forest, Calif.) finished the game, combining for eight goals allowed and one save.

Navy returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 1:30 p.m. (ET) as the Midshipmen take on No. 10 Loyola Marymount in the Mids' final game in California. Live stats will be available throughout the game. In addition, fans can follow @NavyWaterPolo on Twitter for live game updates.

Game 1 Recap: Navy 13, Redlands 11
In game one, the two teams battled back and forth for the first three quarters.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead, but Cole Jacobs (Naperville, Ill.) buried a pass from Zach Luci (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) in the back of the net to knot the score at 1-1. Redlands regained the lead, but Salinas evened things up at two apiece. Following a Bulldogs' score, W. Clark scored to tie the game and had the assist on an Andrew Shashin (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) goal to give Navy its first lead of the game, 4-3.

In the second quarter, Redlands tied the game at four, but Clark gave Navy back the lead with his second goal of the game. The Bulldogs answered, but Jack Weggeland (Riverside, Calif.) responded to put the Mids back up one. With 49 ticks remaining in the half, the Bulldogs knotted the game, sending the two teams into halftime tied 6-6.

Game 2 Recap: Navy 13, Concordia 11
In game two, Navy jumped out to a big lead and hung on to win its fourth game at the tournament. After giving up a goal to Concordia, the Midshipmen responded with an 11-1 run to take a commanding lead. Salinas started the run, followed by goals by Jake Altmayer (Pasadena, Calif.) and Lee. Salinas added two more scores before Jacobs found the back of the net. Following an Eagles' goal, Lee added a pair of goals around a Salinas score. Shashin and Trevor Clark (San Marcos, Calif.) ended the run, giving Navy an 11-2 advantage with just over three minutes to play in the third quarter.

Concordia scored back-to-back goals to pull closer, but Salinas and Luci ended the third quarter with goals to put Navy in front 13-4.

In the fourth quarter, the Midshipmen were able to empty the bench and allow some fresh faces into the pool.
