SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Gavin McJones (Fr., Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) and
Jessica McJones (Sr., Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) returned home to the west coast for the ICSA Men's and Women's Singlehanded National Championships where they each finished 10th and 12th, respectively, this past weekend in the final college sailing regatta of the fall.
Each of the men's and women's events had 18 competitors in the field after each individual qualified through their conference championships earlier in the fall.
Gavin McJones started the event strong with a victory in the first race of the weekend in the men's event. After the first race, the fleet started to get more comfortable in the conditions and racing became more challenging.
On the first day of racing, the wind built into the mid-teens and many races were sailed with 10 men's races and nine women's races being completed on day one. The right side of the course was favored throughout the day and it was hard to rebound from a tough start with all boats going the same way. Both the men's and women's fleets featured a deep field of talented Laser sailors and in the hiking conditions, the Midshipmen found themselves in the middle of the fleet most of the day.
The final day of racing on Sunday featured a much lighter wind and the course became more dynamic.
Jessica McJones found her groove on the starting line and finished the event with some strong races.
In the end,
Gavin McJones finished 10th overall and
Jessica McJones posted a 12th-place finish.
"While both Gavin and Jessica were hoping for a higher finish, we are very proud of them both for qualifying to compete in this prestigious event," head coach
Ian Burman commented.
Navy has concluded its fall slate and will return to competition in February 2020 for the spring portion of its schedule.
