ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The 2019 CoSIDA Academic All-District Women's Soccer Teams were recently announced and the Navy women's soccer midfielder duo of
Cadie Higginson (Sr., New Orleans, La.) and
Victoria Tran (So., Clarksville, Md.) were recognized as two of the top 13 student-athletes in the region. Made up of NCAA Division I schools in the D.C., Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia area, Higginson and Tran are two of the four midfielders named to the team.
A two-time member of both the Academic All-Patriot League Team and now the CoSIDA Academic All-District II Team, Higginson, the Mids' central defensive midfielder has once again proven herself amongst the region's best players and students as was named last week to the All-Patriot League First Team for the second consecutive season. A tenacious two-way player, Higginson's abilities appear on both sides of the ball for nearly a full-90 minutes every game. In total, she has appeared in 18 games in 2019 and been on the field for 1,675 minutes. Additionally, in league play didn't leave the pitch as she played all 872 minutes of the Mids' nine Patriot League contests, as well as all 200 minutes in the Mids' two Patriot League Tournament games. For the year on offense, Higginson has provided Navy with two goals and two assists, while taking 27 shots. In the classroom, Higginson thrives in her major, robotics and control engineering, with a 3.96 cumulative GPA. She stands top-10 in both the USNA's Class of 2020 for Military Order of Merit and Overall Order of Merit.
Also a robotics and control engineering major, Tran is a first-time honoree for this distinguished award. Appearing in all 21 games for Navy as sophomore in 2019, Tran was selected for the second straight year to the All-Patriot League Second Team following the conclusion of the regular season. Noted for her crafty footwork and passing, Tran has tallied three goals and added an assist for the Mids this season, including the game-winning goal for Navy in the Patriot League Championship Final versus Army on Sunday. Similar to Higginson, Tran has been on the field in nearly all of the big moments for Navy in Patriot League play with 824 total minutes of regular action versus conference opposition. For the year, she's played 1,718 minutes and taken 35 shots. Away from the field in her studies, Tran has recorded a perfect 4.00 GPA in her first two semesters at the Naval Academy, while standing top-25 in the Overall Order of Merit for the Class of 2022.
Higginson and Tran now advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team ballot. The Academic All-American Team will be selected later this month.
Navy, Penn State and Eastern Kentucky all have multiple players named to the 2019 All-District II Team as the Nittany Lions were represented by Kerry Abello and Kaleigh Riehl, while the Colonials had Larissa Heslop and Kylie Thompson earn accolades.
As a program, this is the seventh time that multiple Midshipmen were named to the Academic All-District First Team in the same year as Higginson and Sydney Fortson earned accolades last November. This is part of a three-year run of success as prior to 2017 when Fortson and Meghan Hegarty were honored, the most recent pairing was that of Beth Reed and Shelly Moeller in 2009. All-time, Navy now has had 30 selections to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team since 1997.
The 2019 Patriot League Champions, Navy will be in action this weekend at the NCAA Tournament in Raleigh, N.C. A first round matchup against the N.C. State Wolfpack (10-6-4) lies ahead for the Mids (16-2-3) at 7 p.m. at the Dail Soccer Complex on Friday night.
