Mids to Wrestle Top-Ranked Penn State for First Time Since 2005

For the second consecutive week, the Navy wrestling team will battle a team that currently resides inside of the top 10 in the national rankings. The Mids, who opened the season last week with a pair of wins against Fresno State and California Baptist against a loss to No. 6 Wisconsin, will rekindle their series with defending National Champion Penn State (0-0) when the two programs square off on Sunday (2:00 pm) at Rec Hall in State College, Pa.

Additionally, Navy will send a handful of wrestlers to compete at the East Stroudsburg Open, also on Sunday, beginning at 9:00 am.

Recapping Last Weekend
• Navy (2-1) opened the weekend with a 25-9 victory over Fresno State at the Broadway Pier in San Diego before dropping a 24-12 match to Wisconsin in the main event at the Battle on the Midway. The Mids bounced back to score a 27-9 win at California Baptist last Saturday.
• All 11 wrestlers who participated last weekend in dual action earned a victory.
• Logan Treaster (125) and Jacob Koser (197) were the lone wrestlers to go 3-0 for the Mids.
• Treaster, a junior, had seen dual action in a pair of DIII matches as a freshman, however, opening weekend marked his first dual matches against DI opponents.
• Koser, a freshman, amassed a team-best 12 points in three matches, including 6 via his pin against Fresno State's Ryan Reyes in the opener.
• Navy's two ranked wrestlers - #12 Tanner Skidgel (165) and #11 Spencer Carey (174) - finished the weekend with 2-1 marks. Skidgel's lone loss was against third-ranked Evan Wick of Wisconsin, while Spencer dropped a tough 3-1 decision to Fresno State's Jackson Hemauer, who scored a takedown in the final eight seconds to secure the upset.
• Cody Trybus (141), who was the starter at 133 pounds as a rookie, returned to the starting lineup over the weekend, bumping up to 141 pounds. The junior produced a 2-1 record and now stands 9-5 in dual action over his career.
• Freshman John Birchmeier (285) posted a 1-2 record, but his two losses were by a combined 2 points. Among the losses was a 1-0 decision against sixth-ranked Trent Hillger of Wisconsin.

Odds and Ends
• With its 2 wins last weekend, Navy is now just one win shy of 900 in its 112th season as a varsity program. Navy's all-time record stands at 899-306-26.
• Following last week's matches, 125-pound Logan Treaster added his name to the Trackwrestling rankings, coming in at No. 31. At 133 pounds, Casey Cobb also joined the ranks at No. 17 by Flowrestling, No. 19 by The Open Mat and No. 25 by Trackwrestling.

• Top-ranked 165-pound Vincenzo Joseph is a three-time All-American, three-time NCAA finalist and two-time NCAA Champion

The Series
• Sunday's dual marks the 86th meeting in a series that began with an 18-9 Navy victory on Feb. 7, 1910.
• Penn State owns a 48-30-7 advantage in the series, including a 20-7-3 mark in matches wrestled in State College, Pa.
• The Nittany Lions have won each of the last five duals and 15 of the last 16.
• Navy's last victory in the series came on Nov. 14, 1993, when the Mids captured a 17-15 victory in State College.
• The programs last met in dual action on Dec. 9, 2005, when Penn State posted a 28-6 win over Navy in Annapolis.
• This marks the first head-to-head dual between Navy's Joel Sharratt and Penn State's Cael Sanderson, who graduated from rival programs - Sharratt a 1995 graduate of the University of Iowa and Sanderson a 2002 graduate of Iowa State University.

What's Ahead
• Next on the docket for the Midshipmen is the 42nd annual Navy Classic slated for Nov. 23 at Wesley Brown Field House in Annapolis. Action is due to begin at 10:00 am.
