Bonus Points Prove Costly in Mids’ Loss to Lock Haven

A near capacity crowd filled the Red Lion High School (Pa.) gymnasium Friday evening to watch the 2019 Rumble in the Jungle featuring the Navy wrestling team (3-3) against the host Lock Haven Bald Eagles (1-1). The fans were entertained from the opening whistle to the thrilling finish as the Mids overcame a 12-point deficit to trim Lock Haven's lead to one (16-15) heading into the final match. It was redshirt senior DJ Fehlman who would play spoiler, however, as the two-time NCAA qualifier defeated Navy junior Casey Cobb, 9-3, to secure the 19-15 Lock Haven victory.

The Highlights

• Navy never led in tonight's dual, as the Bald Eagles opened up a 12-0 lead thanks in part to an Alex Klucker pin at 157 pounds.

• Both teams won five matches, however, Lock Haven scored two bonus-point victories (10 pts vice 6 pts) - pin at 157 pounds and major decision at 184 pounds.

• After Lock Haven opened the match with three consecutive wins, Navy won five of the final seven matches.

• Down by as much as 12 (12-0 after first 3 matches), the Mids outscored the Bald Eagles 15-4 over the course of the next six matches (165-174-184-197-285-125) to get to within one.

• 16th-ranked Spencer Carey (174) and Andrew Buckley (184) returned to the mat after missing last week's dual against Maryland. Carey, the Mids' team captain, earned a 9-4 victory over Jared Siegrist and inched closer to the 50-win milestone. Carey stands 47-29 heading into the new calendar year. Buckley, meanwhile, suffered a 12-3 setback against two-time NCAA qualifier Corey Hazel.

Jacob Koser (197) earned his team-leading eighth win of the year on a 6-0 victory over Blake Reynolds. It's the third time this season he has shut out his opponent.

Logan Treaster (125) continued his winning ways, capturing a 10-4 victory over Trey Hartsock. He leads the way with a 5-1 dual record this season in his first year as a starter.

• Tonight's match marked just the third meeting between the two programs in a series that dates back to 1990.

• Tonight's match marked the first time the two programs have met since Jan. 11, 1992.

• The Mids are now 2-1 in the series.

What's Ahead

• Navy will step aside from the competition mat for the next two weeks before resuming action on Jan. 1-2 at the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, Tenn.
