Navy Wrestling Faces Maryland in Home Opener

The Navy wrestling team (2-2) will play host to in-state rival Maryland (1-1) on Friday evening (7:30 pm) at Alumni Hall in what will be the Mids' first home dual of the 2019-20 season.

Tickets
• Admission to Friday night's match is $10 for adults and $5 for youth (18 years & younger).

Parking / Yard Access
• A reminder that vehicular access to the Naval Academy is limited to those drivers with a Department of Defense identification card.
• It is suggested that fans park at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium ($5 per vehicle) and ride the FREE shuttle bus to and from the match.
• Buses will run every 15 minutes starting one hour before the match and will continue running throughout the event.
• Note that a government issued identification card must be carried and presented by visitors to the USNA prior to being allowed onto The Yard.
• Fans may also park outside of the Naval Academy grounds and walk on with proper identification.

Navy Notes
• Sixth-season Navy head coach Joel Sharratt has led Navy to a 2-2 record.
• The Mids opened their season with a 25-9 victory over Fresno State at the Broadway Pier in San Diego on Nov. 1, before dropping a 24-12 match to Wisconsin later that evening in the main event at the Battle on the Midway. Navy also has a win over California Baptist (27-9) and a loss to then top-ranked Penn State (45-0).
• Navy enters Friday night's match just a win away from recording the program's 900th victory (899-308-27).
• Returning NCAA qualifiers Tanner Skidgel (165) and Spencer Carey (174) are both ranked among the nation's top 20 in their respective weight classes. Skidgel has put forth a 5-3 overall mark and a 2-2 dual record en route to a #9 ranking, while Carey stands 17th with a 6-3 record that includes a 2-2 mark in dual action.
• Skidgel, Carey and rookie Jacob Koser (197) placed among the top three in their respective weight classes to lead the Mids to a seventh-place finish at the 18-team Navy Classic on Nov. 23 which was also the last time the Mids were on the competition mat. Skidgel and Carey took second place in their matches, while Koser finished third.
• Among Navy's projected lineup for Friday night, only Casey Cobb, Cody Trybus, Tanner Skidgel and Spencer Carey came into the season with previous starting experience.

Maryland Notebook
• Under the direction of first-year head coach Alex Clemsen, Maryland owns a 1-1 record.
• The Terps opened their season with a 42-6 victory over Southern Virginia before dropping a 34-6 decision against then 24th-ranked Virginia.
• Friday night's match against the Mids will mark Maryland's first dual since opening weekend (Nov. 1-2).
• The Terps have yet to wrestle at home - dual or tournament.
• Maryland's lone ranked wrestler is 174-pound redshirt sophomore Philip Spadafora, who stands 20th nationally. He has produced an 8-3 record, all in tournament action.

The Series
• Navy leads the all-time series against Maryland, 56-11-3, including wins in each of the last seven meetings.  
• In last year's dual, won eight of the 10 bouts to claim a 31-6 victory over the Terps in College Park.
• Navy owns a 33-5-1 mark against Maryland in Annapolis, winning each of the last three.
• The Terps' last win in the series came on Jan. 20, 2012, when they clipped the Mids in Annapolis, 23-12.

What's Ahead
• Navy returns to action a week from Friday (Dec. 13) when it battles No. 25 Lock Haven at Red Lion High School in Red Lion, Pa. Action is slated to begin at 7:00 pm.
