ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy track and field team broke a pair of records as the Midshipmen opened the 2019-20 season at the Navy Invitational I on Saturday at the Wesley A. Brown Field House in Annapolis. The women's 4x400m relay team of Chelsey Edwards (Schertz, Texas), Chloe Alfieri (Harvard, Mass.), Kara Kakascik (Weirton, W.Va.), and Molly Mangan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) posted a collective time of 3:44.21 to break the school record by two seconds, while
Clayton Thompson (Corpus Christi, Texas) posted a pair of times in the preliminaries (7.93) and finals (7.96) of the 60m hurdles to break the previous school mark.
"It was fun to see," Director of Navy Track and Field
Jamie Cook said after the meet. "I knew we were ready and trained hard all Fall. To see how they competed and handled it, they did a fantastic job. I am excited about energy as we move forward into the Christmas break."
The women's team ended the meet with a school record in the 4x400m relay. Edwards, Alfieri, Kakascik, and Mangan trimmed 2.10 seconds off the previous school record of 3:46.31 that was set in 2018 by Edwards, Christina Quigley (Lorton, Va.), Brittany Burg ('18), and Amanda Agana ('19).
Thompson topped the previous record of 8.00 in the 60m hurdles twice on the day.
Kordell Williams ('19) was the only Midshipmen to run an 8.00 in the 60m hurdles, until Thompson posted a pair of sub-eight times. The junior opened the day with a 7.93 in the prelims to set the new school record, while also posting a sub-eight mark in the finals with a 7.96.
In addition to the records, Navy also posted 36 IC4A / ECAC qualifying times / marks. The men's team registered 22 IC4A qualifiers, while the women's team notched 14 ECAC qualifying performances.
Navy will take a break for finals and Christmas before resuming competition on Saturday, Jan. 11, as the Midshipmen host the Princeton Tigers in a dual meet at Wesley A. Brown Field House.
