Navy Sweeps Sunday Doubleheader Against Mount St. Mary’s and Fairleigh Dickinson

The Midshipmen extend winning streak to five matches

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women's tennis team (8-3) stretched its winning streak to five matches following a pair of wins on Sunday afternoon at the Tose Family Tennis Center. The Midshipmen started the day with their first sweep of the season against Mount St. Mary's (0-3), 7-0. Navy then defeated Fairleigh Dickinson (2-2), 6-1.

Along with pushing its win streak to five, Navy has now won all eight of its home matches in 2019.

"In the morning match, it was critical that we come out aggressive early, which I thought we did in the doubles," head coach Keith Puryear said following the two matches. "Catalina [Rico] and Amanda [Cyr] had a back-and-forth match in their doubles match in the afternoon and they were doing a lot of the right things, but just a little lack of execution early on in the match. They have been playing pretty good lately and I thought they did a good job toward the end to keep the pressure on their opponent and taking care of their serves. It came down to them getting a late break and that was the match. I thought the other doubles teams did a really good job at getting ahead early and continuing to push forward. I thought that was one of the pluses today.

"In the singles matches, I thought we did a pretty good job of trying to maintain the momentum after getting the doubles point. Aimee [Dervishian] did a good job in her match, which was a tight match. Her opponent [Alexa Quintanilla] was an All-Conference performer last year and for Aimee to step up and play the number one spot was definitely a challenge for her, but I think she passed with flying colors. Aimee's match had a lot of ebbs and flows throughout and at the end of the match, I liked the way she handled the challenge of finishing the match and not backing off and going after it.

"Another bright spot today was Aimee and Annalise [Klopfer] in their doubles match, as well as, Annalise in her singles match. I was really pleased with what I saw there. Across the board, we are making progress in certain things we are trying to focus. I feel that sometimes we are trying to implement them in matches, sometimes the execution is not there, but the thought process is getting us where we need to be as we continue to push forward and get ready for conference."

Navy 7, Mount St. Mary's 0

Navy rolled through doubles to take the 1-0 lead in the match after winning each of the doubles contests. The pair of Kaylah Hodge (Jr., Upper Marlboro, Md.) and Miranda Deng (So., North Potomac, Md.) started the day with a 6-1 win over Hannah Davis and Alexa Quintanilla at No. 1 doubles. The freshmen pair of Katreina Corpuz (Fr., Ewa Beach, Hawaii) and Meghana Komarraju (Fr., Vienna, Va.) clinched the doubles point following a 6-1 victory of their own at No. 2 doubles against Emma Blake and Megan Smith.

In the third doubles contest, Kacey Moore (Fr., Wellington, Fla.) and Tina Li (So., Wexford, Md.) paired up to beat Taylor Cook and Mia Pittman, 6-2.

To start singles competition, Danika Kahatapitiya (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va.) dropped just one game to sweep Blake at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-1. Moore followed suit with the same scoreline at No. 4 singles against Cook, 6-0, 6-1. The Midshipmen's clinching point came at No. 3 singles from senior captain Catalina Rico (San Jose, Calif.), who beat Smith in a 6-2, 6-2 affair.

Looking for its first sweep of the season, Navy did not drop a set en route to shutting out the Mountaineers. Li won 6-0, 7-5 at fifth-seeded singles and then Amanda Cyr (So., Cary, N.C.) won in straight sets against Davis, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 2 singles. Aimee Dervishian (Jr., Milton, Ga.) secured the 7-0 sweep for Navy at No. 1 singles following a narrow 7-5, 7-6 (7-1) victory against Quintanilla. In the tiebreaker, Dervishian found her rhythm and won the first six points on her way to the victory.

Navy 6, Fairleigh Dickinson 1

In the second match of the day for the Midshipmen, they won the doubles points for the eighth-straight time at home to start the season. The duo of Dervishian and Annalise Klopfer (Fr., Palm Harbor, Fla.) won a 6-1 match over Marta Ruszczynska and Aleksandra Vorozheikina at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3 doubles, Navy's pair of Li and Kahatapitiya grabbed a 6-1 win against Tatiana Eftenoiu and Carolin Menzen.

With the doubles point secured, Cyr and Rico battled to a 6-4 victory at the top-seeded doubles match against Patricia Eftenoiu and Anamaria Vladescu to sweep the doubles matches.

As the match shifted into singles, Komarraju doubled the Midshipmen lead with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles against Smriti Singh. Klopfer put Navy on the brink of its fifth-straight victory after winning at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-2, over Tatiana Eftenoiu. Deng clinched the match for the Midshipmen at the second-seeded singles match following her 6-2, 6-3 win against Patricia Eftenoiu.

After the match was secured, Corpuz and Moore finished back-to-back with straight-set wins as Navy went ahead, 6-0. Corpuz won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 singles and Moore earned a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 5 singles. In the lone match left on the court, Hodge started strong in a back-and-forth affair against Ruszczynska winning the opening set, 6-4. Momentum in the second set continued to hang in the balance after Ruszczynska won 7-5 to force a tiebreaking third set. In the tiebreaker, Ruszczynska held off Hodge to win 10-6 and spoil the Navy shutout.

The Midshipmen continue their homestand with a doubleheader next Saturday against Howard at 9 a.m. and George Washington at 2 p.m. at the Tose Family Tennis Center.
