Women’s Tennis Sweeps Sunday Doubleheader

Navy has now won eight of its last nine matches

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women's tennis team (11-4) picked a pair of victories on Sunday as the Midshipmen defeated George Mason (6-3), 6-1, before closing the day with a 4-3 victory over Delaware (3-7). The Mids have now won eight of their last nine matches.

"I am proud of the ladies and the fight shown today," head coach Keith Puryear said. "Our attention must now shift to this coming weekend with three more tough ones ahead."

Next weekend the Midshipmen play a trio of matches. Navy hosts Princeton on Friday, March 1, before taking on Seton Hall and Johns Hopkins on Saturday, March 2.

Navy 6, George Mason 1

Navy started off the day by posting a 6-1 victory over George Mason.

The Midshipmen rolled through the doubles competition winning all three doubles spots to claim the doubles point. Kaylah Hodge (Jr., Upper Marlboro, Md.) and Miranda Deng (So., North Potomac, Md.) notched the first victory of the day, cruising to a 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles.

Brooke Bogdanovich (So., Suwanee, Ga.) and Kacey Moore (Fr., Wellington, Fla.) secured the doubles point with a 6-3 victory in the No. 3 spot. Danika Kahatapitiya (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va.) and Tina Li (So., Wexford, Pa.) completed the doubles sweep with a 6-3 win on court two.

In singles action, Navy claimed five of the six courts to cruise to the victory. Annalise Klopfer (Fr., Palm Harbor, Fla.) opened up the singles scoring with a 6-0, 6-0, straight-set victory in the No. 3 spot. She was followed by Catalina Rico (Sr., San Jose, Calif.) who claimed a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 5 singles to put the Midshipmen one victory away from the overall team win. At court No. 2, Ansofi Wreder (Jr., Miami, Fla.) secured the team win with a 6-0, 6-3, straight-set victory. Hodge followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles, while Li was edged in three sets (3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (9-11)) on court No. 6. The final match of the day saw Aimee Dervishian (Jr., Milton, Ga.) claim a three-set victory (5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10-4)) to close out the morning session.

"Against George Mason, the doubles did a great job of starting us off on the right foot," Puryear stated after the first win. "Kaylah and Miranda played an almost flawless match to get the first doubles win and Tina and Danika beat a team that had given us trouble at regionals this fall. George Mason is much improved and they battled us in the singles. Kaylah, Annalise, Ansofi, and Cat did a great job to win in straights to keep the momentum going in singles. While Aimee battled a tough player to win in three."

Navy 4, Delaware 3

Navy posted a 4-3 victory in the night cap against Delaware. The Mids jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but back-to-back victories by the Blue Hens closed the gap. The Midshipmen used a three-set victory at court three to secure the victory.

The match started out with a sweep of the doubles point. Amanda Cyr (So., Cary, N.C.) and Rico teamed up for a 6-4 win in the No. 1 spot. Katreina Corpuz (Fr., Ewa Beach, Hawaii) and Meghana Komarraju (Fr., Vienna, Va.) secured the doubles point with a 6-3 victory. Dervishian and Klopfer closed out the sweep of doubles with a 7-5 win.

In singles action, Komarraju posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles to push the advantage to 2-0. Moore followed with a 6-4, 6-2 straight-set win on court six to give Navy a 3-0 edge. Delaware's Viva Laas defeated Wreder, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, on court one to put the Blue Hens on the scoreboard. At No. 5 singles, Tayo Adetunji won in three sets over Cyr (6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-1) to close the gap to 3-2. Corpuz sealed the overall victory at No. 3 singles. The freshman notched a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 win to give Navy the doubleheader sweep. In the final match of the day, Deng was edged by Delaware's Caragh Courtney, 6-7 (0-7), 6-2, 7-5.

"Against Delaware, we started by winning three hotly contested doubles matches," Puryear commented to conclude the day. "In each of the doubles matches, we got a break late and then did great to hold serve to close the matches. First Cat and Amanda, followed by the two plebes, Katreina and Meghana, who did the same. The singles was an up and down affair. We won the first two matches in straight sets with both Meghana and Kacey securing points. Then Delaware did a good job of changing the flow of the match after losing the first set on each of the remaining courts and winning on three of them. Katreina showed great resolve and mental tenacity to go down a break early in the third, then fight back to win 6-2."

Navy finishes its 12-match homestand this coming week with three matches on tap. The Mids host Princeton on Friday and then host Seton Hall and Johns Hopkins on Saturday.
