DANBURY, Conn. - Coming off of a dramatic come-from-behind victory versus service academy rival, Army, the Navy gymnastics program was recognized with a pair of ECAC weekly awards. For their efforts in Saturday's Star Meet win, the freshmen duo of
Cash Buske (Madison, Wisc.) and
Nehemiah Baker (Oak Ridge, N.C.) were selected as the ECAC's Specialist and Rookie of the Week, respectively.
Buske, a high bar specialist, came through with a huge set on Saturday as he posted a career-best 13.6-point score on the apparatus. A testament to Navy's depth, Buske was the Mids' only event winner at the meet. Coupled with his teammate
Max Gerber's 13.5, the Mids' high bar lineup outscored the Black Knights, 66.9-65.25. That 1.65-point advantage helped Navy complete its comeback by a final score of 401.1-400.55.
Baker also played a large role in the Mids' Star Meet victory as he competed on the rings and vault on Saturday and recorded 27.95 cumulative points for Navy. On his first event, the rings, Baker placed fifth overall with a 13.55-point score, that was just 0.05 points out of second place and 0.15 behind the event winner. On the ensuing event, the vault, he notched a 14.40, that was good for second, 0.15 points out of first.
These are the first ECAC weekly awards of both Buske and Baker's young careers. As a program in 2019, Navy gymnasts have now collected four weekly honors as
David Toussaint was named ECAC Specialist of the Week on Jan. 15,
Josh Williams earned the ECAC Rookie of the Week accolade on Jan. 29.
Navy will continue its competition versus service academies this Saturday when the Mids host Air Force and Army in the 2019 All-Academy Championship. The three academies will face off at Macdonough Hall beginning at 1 p.m.
