ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy men's tennis team (10-2) stretched its winning streak to six matches following a pair of 4-0 wins against Monmouth (1-1) and George Mason (0-4) on Saturday at the Tose Family Tennis Center. The Midshipmen started its 10-game homestand with the two wins on Saturday and have now gone 8-1 in nine home matches this season.
Navy 4, Monmouth 0
In the first match of the day, Navy used strong doubles play to get off to a fast start. The Midshipmen took two of the three doubles matches to win the doubles point. At second-seeded doubles,
Jack Dabek (Fr., Dublin, Ohio) and
Derrick Thompson (Fr., Towson, Md.) won a 6-2 match over Will Cooke Wharton and Srdjan Jakovljevic. Navy secured the doubles point at No. 3 doubles after
Romesh Kahatapitiya (So., Virginia Beach, Va.) and
Jan Kjellberg (Fr., White Plains, N.Y.) earned a 6-3 victory against Max Benaim and Sergio Martinez.
At the final doubles match that went unfinished after the Midshipmen won the doubles point,
Andrew Ton (So., Milpitas, Calif.) and
Jake Fishkin (Fr., Baltimore, Md.) were leading Nicola Pipoli and Alberto Giuffrida, 4-3.
Heading into singles competition, Navy needed just three wins to beat the Hawks. Thompson put the Midshipmen ahead by two points with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles against Jakovljevic. Ton pushed the Navy lead to three with a straight-set win over Pipoli at the top-seeded singles match, 6-2, 6-3.
Kjellberg clinched the match for Navy at No. 5 singles after beating Martinez, 6-2, 7-5. In the final three matches that went unfinished, Navy and Monmouth split the opening two sets and were in the middle of the third set. Each of the unfinished matches saw Monmouth win the opening set, but the Midshipmen rallied to win the second set in each contest to force the third set. After Kjellberg's clinching point, the Hawks were ahead in each of the third sets.
Following the match, head coach
Chris Garner said, "After taking the doubles point Andrew [Ton] and Derrick [Thompson] played very well in singles to give the team a 3-0 lead. While Greg [Durham], Jake [Fishkin] and Peter [Lohrbach] were in very competitive three-set matches, Jan was able to ear the fourth point for the team with some great play."
Navy 4, George Mason 0
Navy got off to another strong start after winning the doubles points against George Mason. The first of two wins for the Midshipmen in doubles was at No. 3 doubles, where
Jack McBride (Fr., Chapel Hill, N.C.) and
Matthew Lee (Fr., San Diego, Calif.) teamed up to shutout Giuliano Buzoianu and Erick Rivas, 6-0. Navy secured the doubles point with Ton and Dabek winning 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. In the unfinished doubles contest at No. 2, Kahatapitiya and Kjellberg were ahead 5-4 at the time the Midshipmen took the 1-0 lead.
In the singles portion of the dual, Kahatapitiya earned the first singles win of the match for the Midshipmen with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Rivas at No. 6 singles. Lee put Navy on the brink of victory after taking down Ryan Charles, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 5 singles.
Durham secured the win for at the second-seeded singles contest after sweeping Pally Ray in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
In the final matches left on the court,
Peter Lohrbach (So., Little Neck, N.Y.) was a game away from beating Buzoianu at No. 4 singles as he led 6-4, 5-0 at the conclusion of the dual. At No. 3 singles, Fishkin won the first set, 6-3, and was ahead in the second set, 4-1. The final match saw Thompson lose in a tiebreaker in the opening stanza, 7-6 (7-5), but was leading the second set, 2-1, against Edward Ayers.
"Jack [McBride] and Matthew [Lee] got the ball rolling with a decisive victory at the third doubles match," Garner said after the match against George Mason. "In singles, Romesh [Kahatapitiya] and Matthew [Lee] played terrific to get to the team to three points, while Greg [Durham] was able to clinch the match with a nice straight-set win."
The Midshipmen are back on the court next Sunday against Villanova and Temple. Navy hosts Villanova at 9 a.m. followed by a 12:30 p.m. contest against Temple. Both matches are scheduled to be played inside the Tose Family Tennis Center.
