Navy senior midfielder
Ian Burgoyne (Darien, Conn.), who served as Brigade Commander at the Naval Academy during the fall semester, is one of 30 D-I men's lacrosse players who have been selected as candidates for the 2019 Senior CLASS Award it was announced by the organization.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. The complete list of candidates follows this release.
Burgoyne, who will be commissioned an Ensign in the United States Navy upon graduation and serve as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Officer, has found success within every platform with which he's been involved at the Academy - whether it be as a four-year member of the Navy lacrosse team, serving in a leadership role within the Brigade of Midshipmen or reaping the benefits from his success in the classroom.
Burgoyne received one of the highest honors when he was selected to serve as the Naval Academy's Brigade Commander this past fall. The Brigade Commander is the highest ranking midshipman within the 4,400 student body. Chosen for his outstanding leadership, he was responsible for much of the Brigade's day-to-day activities, as well as the professional training of other midshipmen. As the Brigade Commander, he led a staff that was heavily involved in coordinating the funeral for Naval Academy graduate Senator John McCain which took place on the grounds of the Naval Academy. Burgoyne, the brigade Executive Officer and other key members of the staff organized roughly 600 midshipmen for the funeral at the Chapel and for midshipmen to execute a final salute as his procession headed to the cemetery.
Burgoyne also serves as a SHAPE (Sexual Harassment Assault Prevention Education) peer educator at the Academy. Peer Educators teach weekly classes/sessions focused on setting a positive culture about sexual harassment and assault, as well as educating about common misconceptions and myths. These sessions are geared towards all classes at the Naval Academy.
Majoring in Applied Mathematics, he owns a 3.86 grade-point average. He has earned a 4.00 grade-point average in three of the seven semesters at the Academy. He has been named to the Superintendent's List six times, the Commandant's List seven times and the Dean's List once, while also being recognized by the Patriot League three times as a member of its academic honor roll. He stands 126th in his class of 1,082 students in Academic Order of Merit, 51st in Military Order of Merit and 112th in Overall Order of Merit.
He was the recipient of another great honor upon the completion of the fall lacrosse season when he was selected by a vote of his peers to wear jersey No. 40 this season in honor of fallen Navy SEAL and former Navy lacrosse player Lt. Brendan Looney, who was killed in Afghanistan on Sept. 21, 2010. Burgoyne has seen action in 27 games over his career, earning a pair of starts at midfield his sophomore season.
Burgoyne is one of nine Patriot League players named to the list. Joining him are James Burr (Boston U.), Craig Chick (Lehigh), Nate Jones (Army), Reen Malas (Bucknell), Andrew Pettit (Lehigh), Pat Spencer (Loyola), Jacob Stover (Loyola) and Johnny Surdick (Army).
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists later in the season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced in conjunction with the 2019 NCAA Men's Lacrosse National Championship in May.
