Buchter Advances to NCAA Diving Championship in a Second Event

ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– One day after qualifying for the NCAA Championship in one-meter diving, Navy's Bradley Buchter (Jr., Hickory, N.C.) qualified for the national championship in the three-meter event with his placing on the board Tuesday at the NCAA Zone A Diving Championship at Lejeune Hall in Annapolis, Md.

Navy qualified three of its four divers for finals on Tuesday.  All four entered Mids reached the finals on Monday.

"We just continued what we started yesterday," said Navy head coach Rich MacDonald.  "We were really consistent and had three of the four back into the finals.  With being such a young team, how much they are learning and experiencing this week is awesome."

Buchter, who competed on both boards at the NCAA Championship in 2017 and '18, placed fourth in the three-meter competition Tuesday to advance to this year's meet in a second event.  He needed to finish among the top-12 divers on the three-meter board to qualify for the NCAA Championship in the event after placing third on the one-meter board Monday.  He stood second after the six preliminary rounds of diving before totaling 737.65 points to comfortably secure his berth in the event at the national championship in two weeks.

"It is huge to consistently go to nationals," said MacDonald of Buchter.  "As I said to Bradley this morning, 'sorry I didn't congratulate you because it is expected that you go to this meet,' but it shouldn't be because it is so difficult to get there.  He continues to step up to the competition and continues to get to that meet.  It is pretty special."

Also reaching the finals in Tuesday's three-meter competition was teammate Jake Hedrick (So., Hummelstown, Pa), who placed ninth on the board with 663.45 points over his 12 dives.  Navy's Nash Nickerson (Jr., Doylestown, Pa.) would finish 20th overall (the top-18 divers advance to the finals) in the event with a score of 291.20 points.

Reaching her second final in as many days was Hannah Montau (Fr., Germantown, Md.).  The 14th-pace finisher in Monday's three-meter competition, she totaled 504.40 points Tuesday to place 12th on the one-meter board.

"The more big meet experience you can have, the better you are going to be in the future," said MacDonald of Montau's performance.  "Each time you get the chance to do another list (of dives) with this crowd and competition and judges, you can build upon it."

The zone meet will conclude Wednesday with platform diving starting at 1 p.m.
