DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – In a back-and-forth battle, the Navy women's tennis team (15-6) edged out Embry-Riddle (3-4) in a 4-3 contest, where the Midshipmen's four singles wins helped Navy erase the deficit after doubles to beat the Eagles on Tuesday afternoon.
Â
Navy has won its first three matches during its Spring Break trip in Florida and the Midshipmen have now won their last four matches.Â
Â
"It was a tough match today and we gutted one out," head coach
Keith Puryear said after the win. "Embry-Riddle played good ball today in tough conditions. This type of match should serve us well moving forward."
Â
Navy fell behind at the start after dropping the doubles point following just one victory in doubles.
Amanda Cyr (So., Cary, N.C.) and
Meghana Komarraju (Fr., Vienna, Va.) won the first doubles match for the Midshipmen at No. 3, 6-2, over Roberta Krvajica and Mafalda Soares.
Â
Embry-Riddle evened the doubles matches at one win apiece following a 6-3 win at second-seeded doubles. Georgia Wood and Alexis Marshall edged
Tina Li (So., Wexford, Pa.) and
Danika Kahatapitiya (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va.) in the match at No. 2 doubles. In a tightly contested match at No. 1 doubles,
Annalise Klopfer (Fr., Palm Harbor, Fla.) and
Aimee Dervishian (Jr., Milton, Ga.) were unable to pick up the doubles point for Navy after falling to Itxaso Blanco and Jillian Hobbs, 7-5, to round out doubles competition.
Â
At the start of singles competition, the Midshipmen took the lead with back-to-back victories.
Katreina Corpuz (Fr., Ewa Beach, Hawaii) got Navy on the board following a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles against Wood. At No. 6 singles,
Brooke Bogdanovich (So., Suwanee, Ga.) earned another straight-set win against Soares, 6-1, 6-2.
Â
Blanco tied the match, 2-2, at No. 1 singles following a 6-2, 6-4 win against
Ansofi Wreder (Jr., Miami, Fla.). The back-and-forth dual continued between the two teams with
Kaylah Hodge (Jr., Upper Marlboro, Md.) regaining the lead for Navy. Hodge rallied in the second set to win in straight sets over Krvajica, 6-2, 7-5, and put the Midshipmen ahead, 3-2. However, Sabrina Ehrenfort tied the match once again – this time at three points each – after her 6-2, 6-3 win against
Miranda Deng (So., North Potomac, Md.) at No. 4 singles.
Â
In the final match left on the court at No. 5 singles,
Kacey Moore (Fr., Wellington, Fla.) and Marshall went to three sets with the match on the line. Moore started strong with a 6-2 win in the first set and her rally in the second set fell short with Marshall forcing a third set with a 7-5 win in the second set. Moore fell behind, 2-1, in the third set, but rallied to take a 4-3 lead over Marshall. Moore completed the rally in the third set and won 6-4 to win the fourth singles match for Navy, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4, and she sealed the Midshipmen's come from behind 4-3 victory against the Eagles.Â

Navy returns to action on Wednesday afternoon for a pair of matches in Lakeland, Fla. The Midshipmen face Texas at Tyler and Austin College with both matches starting at 12:30 p.m.
