Women’s Tennis Caps Off Spring Break with Wins over Texas at Tyler and Austin College

Navy won all five matches during its road trip in Florida

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Navy women's tennis team (17-6) capped off its Spring Break trip with a 6-1 win over Texas at Tyler and a 7-0 victory against Austin College in Lakeland, Fla.

Following their five victories in Florida, the Midshipmen have run their winning streak to six matches.

Navy 6, Texas at Tyler 1

With Navy defaulting No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles, it found itself down a point in the match and trailing in the race for the doubles point from the start. However, Brooke Bogdanovich (So., Suwanee, Ga.) and Amanda Cyr (So., Cary, N.C.) won a 6-3 contest over Brooke Brewer and Victoria Kniffen at No. 2 doubles.

The pair of Miranda Deng (So., North Potomac, Md.) and Tina Li (So., Wexford, Pa.) clinched the doubles point for the Midshipmen with a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles against Ana Claire Gerletti and Lauren Kuhn.

With the match all square, 1-1, at the start of singles competition, Cyr won at No. 3 singles after Kuhn retired in the second set with Cyr winning the first set, 6-1, and leading, 1-0, in the second set. Ansofi Wreder (Jr., Miami, Fla.) dropped just one game at No. 1 singles against Chloe Chawner to win 6-1, 6-0.

Navy's clinching point came at No. 5 singles after Li won a 6-1, 6-2 contest against Ana Saidan and the Midshipmen went ahead 4-1. In the final two matches on the court, Deng won 6-1, 6-3 against Gerletti at No. 2 singles and Bogdanovich earned a 6-1, 6-4 victory against Brewer at the fourth-seeded singles match.

"It was nice to get a good start in doubles by winning both matches at No. 1 and 2," assistant coach Alessandra Pedergnana said following the contest. "With having only five players available in the match, the ladies had to step up and come out ready from the moment they stepped on the court. I was happy across the lineup with how we competed today. Having been able to get a lot of outdoor matches under our belt it helps us now to push forward into league play."

Navy 7, Austin College 0

Navy completed its perfect stint in Florida with a sweep of Austin College and the Midshipmen dropped just one set throughout the nine matches. Danika Kahatapitiya (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va.) and Kacey Moore (Fr., Wellington, Fla.) got the match started with a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles against Chandler Morris and Katie Seibert.

Katreina Corpuz (Fr., Ewa Beach, Hawaii) and Kaylah Hodge (Jr., Upper Marlboro, Md.) grabbed a 6-0 victory against Georgia Moore and Anna Sergiovanni at the second-seeded doubles match. With the doubles point in hand, Aimee Dervishian (Jr., Milton, Ga.) and Annalise Klopfer (Fr., Palm Harbor, Fla.) completed the doubles sweep with a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles against Diana Carvajalino and Melody Duong.

In the singles matches, Kahatapitiya gave the Midshipmen a 2-0 advantage following her 6-0, 6-0 victory against Brenna McCown at No. 6 singles. Klopfer won in straight sets at No. 2 singles against Sergiovanni, 6-0, 6-1. Kacey Moore clinched the match for the Midshipmen with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles against Seibert.

Over the final three matches on the court, Dervishian beat Georgia Moore, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 singles and Corpuz defeated Morris, 6-2, 6-2. Hodge sealed the sweep for Navy with a 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8) victory against Carvajalino at the top-seeded singles match.

"It was a good match to end break with," head coach Keith Puryear said after Navy's second win of the day. "Austin College played hard on each of the courts, first ball to last, and we had to respect that. We dealt well with the conditions and establishing our game plans from the start of doubles, then each first set in singles. Each of our Spring Break matches, if used correctly, has given us valuable experience and feedback for us to use as we move forward through the season."

Navy returns from Florida to start Patriot League play against Lehigh at 2 p.m. on March 23 in Bethlehem, Pa.
