ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy intercollegiate sailing won the Seahawk Women's Team Race this weekend to cap off its three-regatta weekend where the Midshipmen also posted a pair of runner-up finishes.
After posting strong results to start the spring, Navy finally broke through to get the win at the Seahawk Women's Team Race. Hosted by St. Mary's, this event was the first ever women's team race in MAISA and six teams participated in the event. The first day of racing featured extremely windy conditions and only one round was completed. In the windy conditions, the Midshipmen had a good day, despite a few untimely capsizes that cost them races.
On day two, with moderate conditions, the Midshipmen sailed to a 4-1 record in the second and third rounds to finish 10-5 on the weekend and win the competition in a strong field. Navy's team was led by skippers
Jessica McJones,
Brittney Slook and
Olivia de Olazarra, with crews of
Kelly Milliken,
Madeline Pruzan and
Fiona Lobon.
In coed racing, Navy competed in the final weekend of the regular season of the MAISA team race league competition at the Andrew Szambecki Team Race at Old Dominion. In a stacked field, Saturday saw winds ranging from 15-22 knots from the west, while Sunday had south winds at 5-12 knots. The Midshipmen started strong in the event and got better as the event went on, which included sweeping all the races in the final four to finish second overall in the 10-team field. Navy's skippers were
Max Brill,
Parker Loftus,
Connor Bayless and
JC Hermus. The crews included
Emma Remis, Loftus, Hermus,
Sean Linden,
Sally Johnson and
Kimmie Leonard.
At the MAISA/SAISA Crossover, the conditions were very similar to the Andrew Szambecki Team Race. Seven teams competed in the combined division fleet racing event. Navy was in a tight battle throughout the weekend with the Midshipmen leading going into the last set. However, the host Hampton Pirates finished strong and Midshipmen placed second. Navy's
Gray Benson and
Jack Carminati were second in the combined division while
Louis Margay and
Bartholomew Winn were sixth.
Next up, the Midshipmen travel to Ithaca, N.Y., for the Team Race Challenge this coming weekend.
