Navy wraps up it nine-game homestand with the weekend series against Cornell

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy baseball team (6-6) concludes its nine-game homestand with a three-game series against Cornell (0-6) this weekend. The Midshipmen host the Big Red for a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 11 a.m., followed by a single nine-inning game on Sunday at noon at Terwilliger Brothers Field at Max Bishop Stadium.

Navy comes into the weekend on a four-game winning streak. The Midshipmen offense has sparked the streak over the last three games with a .374 batting average and they have scored at least 11 runs in the last three outings to total 36 runs in over that span.

Last time out, Navy set a season-best with 17 hits and 13 runs scored in a 13-4 victory over UMBC on Thursday to conclude its midweek slate.

Overall, the Midshipmen are hitting .265 at the plate with Liam Lowery guiding the team with a .317 average and a .488 slugging percentage. Lowery also has a team-best nine RBIs, while setting a new career best with a six-game hitting streak.

Navy has also seen the emergence of freshman Zach Stevens who has a .412 batting average in five starts this year and was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week earlier this week. Zach Biggers also had a big week to push his average up to .265 and he now has eight RBIs all coming in the last three games.

The pitching staff for Navy has posted a 3.41 ERA to start the season and the Midshipmen rank 15th in the country with 11.2 strikeouts per nine innings. Noah Song has keyed the pitching staff this season in his three starts with no runs allowed and a nation-leading 36 strikeouts in 18-2/3 innings. Song also ranks second in the country with a 17.36 strikeout per nine-inning mark.

As a staff, Navy totaled 125 strikeouts and is allowing opponents to hit .225 overall. The Mids have five different hurlers with opponent batting averages below .200, including a trio of pitchers with marks below .130. Jack Ferguson leads the staff with a .118 opponent batting average with Jackson Zoch following at .125 and Charlie Connolly has allowed opponents to hit .127 off him this season.

Cornell comes into the series with an 0-6 mark after being swept in road series' at Baylor and VCU. The Big Red are hitting just .127 at the plate with just three hitters posting averages over .200 this season. The duo of Ramon Garza and Will Simoneit lead the way with matching .238 averages. Nicholas Binnie has led Cornell with four of the team's 10 RBIs.

On the mound, the Big Red have compiled a 9.75 ERA in 48 innings, while allowing opponents to hit .367. Colby Wyatt has a team-low 2.53 ERA this year and is 0-1 in two appearances and a start. Seth Urbon has a team-best eight strikeouts in eight innings but has allowed nine runs during his two starts.

All-time, Navy holds a 50-32 advantage over Cornell in the series. However, the last time the two programs squared off was in 2017 in Annapolis. The Big Red won two of the three games in the series at Max Bishop Stadium against the Midshipmen.

First pitch of the upcoming weekend is set for 11 a.m. on Saturday morning to start a doubleheader. Following the doubleheader on Saturday, the two teams are scheduled to finish the series on Sunday at noon.
