Lightweight Crew Goes 3-0 in Spirited Forster Cup Event

Mids' first two boats edged Georgetown by less than a second

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The No. 7 Navy lightweight crew continued its hold on the Forster Cup with an ultra-competitive day of racing on Saturday on the Potomac River. Taking on No. 9 Georgetown in a three-race slate, the visiting Midshipmen won all three contests, though each of the first and second varsity crews clocked in less than a second ahead of the Hoyas. Navy's win by the first varsity secured the Mids their sixth straight Forster Cup victory in a row.

Racing in reverse order, the third varsity event was first on the docket for the Mids and Hoyas on Saturday. Navy's depth was the story of this race as its fourth and fifth boats were also entered. At the completion of the 2,000 meters, the Mids' 4V was victorious with a time of 5:44.2. Navy's 3V and 5V came in back-to-back in close proximity at 5:47.2 and 5:51.5, respectively. Georgetown's third crew was well off the pace at 6:03.3.

The competition ratchetted up over the next two races as the second varsity eight event was decided by 0.6 seconds with Navy coming out on top, 5:45.7 to 5:46.3.

With the Forster Cup on the line in the highlighted first varsity eight race, the Mids and Hoyas were stroke-for-stroke throughout most of the contest. Coming down to the finish, Navy won by a 0.9-second margin at 5:43.2 to 5:44.1.

"The Forster Cup is always a humbling race to be a part of, due to the man the Varsity race is named for," remarked head coach Shawn Bagnall. "John J. Forster is a US Marine that many of our athletes here at Navy can look to for inspiration, not only from his time racing on the US National Team, but also serving his country during the Vietnam War. We're proud to race for this cup each year, and this year was no exception. Semper Fi."

Navy will be back in action next Saturday on the road at Harvard. The Mids and Crimson will be racing on the Charles River for the right to take the Haines Trophy home on April 20.
